GDR championships in gymnastics 1979
The GDR championship in gymnastics was held for the 30th time in 1979 and took place from September 30th to October 5th in Schwedt / Oder . In the all-around competition, Roland Brückner and Regina Grabolle both from SC Dynamo Berlin secured the title. For Brückner it was his fourth title in a row. In the apparatus finals, eight out of ten possible titles went to the gymnasts from SC Dynamo Berlin, which also made them the most successful team in these championships.

All-around
Roland Brückner, who was in the lead after the compulsory program, had to hand this over to his club mate Michael Nikolay after the freestyle . In the all-around final, the defending champion was able to take the lead again on the first device and continuously expanded his lead up to the last device.

Device finals
Date: October 5th
Michael Nikolay won two titles in the device finale. In addition to the one on the horizontal bar, he was able to successfully defend his title on the pommel horse from the previous year. This was also achieved by Lutz Mack on the rings and Ralf-Peter Hemmann on the parallel bars. The other two titles were won by all-around champion Roland Brückner in the jump and Lutz Hoffmann on the ground.

Regina Grabolle, who was already in the lead after compulsory and freestyle, secured her first all-around title in the all-around final with 39.80 out of 40 possible points. The 14-year-old is the youngest GDR champion to win this gymnastics title. Maxi Gnauck, who was 0.05 points behind after the freestyle, lost her title hopes in the all-around final after falling from the bar.

Grabolle secured victory in the vault and on the balance beam, where she received the highest score of 10 for her faultless freestyle. Gnauck won on the uneven bars, where she also got the top grade of 10, and on the floor.
