GDR championships in gymnastics 1981
The GDR gymnastics championships were held for the 32nd time in 1981 and took place from September 15 to 19 in the Cottbus town hall. In the all-around competition, Roland Brückner and Maxi Gnauck both from SC Dynamo Berlin secured the title. For Brückner it was already his sixth title in a row.

All-around
Roland Brückner, who has been in the lead since the compulsory program, then secured his sixth title in a row in the all-around final. With that he overtook Klaus Köste , who made it to five all-around titles in sequence between 1968 and 1972. Brückner's club mates Michael and Jürgen Nikolay ensured the three-time Dynamo success.

all- around champion Roland Brückner defended his title on the ground and shared the title on parallel bars with Michael Nikolay . Nikolay won a second title on the horizontal bar, which this time he had to share with his twin brother and defending champion Jürgen Nikolay . The other titles were secured by Frank Bouchard on the pommel horse, Ralf-Peter Hemmann on the rings and Uwe Kopp in the jump. The 18-year-old Jens Fischer won the second in the jump, the first gymnastics medal for SC Cottbus .
