Michael Nikolay (born December 13, 1956 in Berlin ) is a former German gymnast . His home club was SC Dynamo Berlin .
He won a bronze medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal on the pommel horse and with the team of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Four years later at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow he won the silver medal in the all- around with the GDR team and was again third in the individual competition on the pommel horse. In the individual all-around competition he finished seventh in 1976 and sixth in 1980, in Moscow he also just missed another individual medal with fourth place on the parallel bars .
He achieved his greatest international success at the 1981 World Championships in Moscow, when he was tied with Chinese Xiaoping Li and became world champion on the pommel horse, replacing Hungarian Zoltán Magyar , who had previously won all international championships on this device from 1973 to 1980. Before that, he had also become vice European champion on the pommel horse in 1978, and in the same year he was third with the GDR team in the team all-around at the world championships.
At GDR championships, he won a total of seven national individual titles. He won 1978, 1979, 1980 and 1982 on the pommel horse, 1981 on the parallel bars and 1979 and 1981 on the horizontal bar . He won the title on the horizontal bar in 1981, tied with his twin brother Jürgen Nikolay .
In 1980 and 1982 Nikolay was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit for his sporting successes .
