La Flotte (also La Flotte-en-Ré ) is a municipality with 2762 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) on the island of Île de Ré on the Atlantic coast . It is located in the French department of Charente-Maritime in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine and belongs to Arrondissement of La Rochelle and the Canton of Ile de Re . It is classified as one of the Plus beaux villages de France ( most beautiful villages in France ).

The location of the place on the Île de Ré

The village with its small port is located on the north coast of the Île de Ré. The coastal area is steep, but has a narrow artificial beach in front of it, which is filled with new sand every year.

The largest town on the island, Saint-Martin-de-Ré, is only four kilometers away and the mainland around La Rochelle can be reached after twelve kilometers at Rivedoux-Plage over the bridge to the mainland, which is the departmental road D 735.

Personalities

Gustave Dechezeaux (8 October 1760 - 17 January 1794), member of the National Convention, born in La Flotte. He was wrongly indicted and guillotined in Rochefort , Charente-Maritime . On April 18, 1795, he was rehabilitated by the National Convention.
