Quantifying verse principle
The verse principle that quantifies or also measures syllables is a verse principle in verse theory (metrics) that determines the structural regularities of the meter based on the quantity of the syllables, i.e. through the regular alternation of long and short syllables . It is the determining principle of verse in ancient Greek and Latin poetry, but it also applies to early Arabic literature .
Other verse principles are the accenting principle and the syllable counting principle .
