The old east cemetery of Augsburg is located in the Lechhausen district on Stätzlinger Strasse and Kurt-Schumacher-Strasse. It is a listed building .

history

Little is known about the historical development of the Old East Cemetery in Lechhausen. It is certain that the cholera that broke out in Augsburg in 1854 also reached Lechhausen. The many bodies of this epidemic have already been buried in the new cemetery. In 1892 the area was expanded, as not only Catholics but also Protestant citizens could be buried. The Gottesacker Ordinance of 1892 states:

The extended churchyard - like the old one - has been divided into four fields. Two fields each were designated for the use of Catholics and Protestants, namely the two fields I and III for the Catholics and the two fields II and IV for the Protestants .

Since Lechhausen was incorporated into Augsburg in 1913, the management of the cemetery was transferred to the Fuggerstadt. Further extensions were made in 1931 and 1941. Serious devastation occurred during the bombing raid on Augsburg . After the Second World War, another cemetery was laid out in the east of the city of Augsburg, the Neue Ostfriedhof. The cemetery on Stätzlinger Strasse and Kurt-Schumacher-Strasse was given the name Alter Ostfriedhof. In 2001 and 2002 the cemetery was expanded to the north, where an urn niche wall was also set up.

Today, an average of 250 burials and 130 urn burials take place in the Old East Cemetery each year.
