The St. Gallen tram , locally mostly called tram or tram for short , was a tram in St. Gallen in Switzerland . It was operated between 1897 and 1957, the responsible transport company was called the tramway of the city of St. Gallen or, from 1950, the transport company of the city of St. Gallen .

history

The meter-gauge tramway opened on May 20, 1897. By 1916, the route network had been expanded to an operating length of 11.641 kilometers. The St. Gallen – Trogen railway line , which was opened in 1903 and electrified with 1000 volts direct current and operated by the Trogenerbahn company, which was still an independent company at the time , also used the tram tracks in the city center between Bahnhofplatz and Brühltor. There she drove under the lower voltage of the tram. In 1946 the tram numbered eleven million passengers.

The tram was gradually replaced by the St. Gallen trolleybus from 1950 , the last tram ran on October 1, 1957. Only the tracks shared by the former Trogenerbahn AG remained. The railway infrastructure company responsible for this has been the Appenzeller Bahnen since 2006 .

The tram vehicles were no longer given the changed company name in 1950, they still ran with the address Tram of the City of St. Gallen until they were closed. For advertising purposes, a so-called Swiss standard train was briefly used in St. Gallen in 1955 , it was borrowed from the Zurich tram . He campaigned for tram line 1 to be retained, which was rejected by the citizens in the same year.

The St. Gallen tram initially ran with 550 volts direct current , from 1932/33 onwards with 600–630 volts.

Track openings

The individual sections of the tram went into operation as follows:

  • Bahnhof –Krontal, opened on May 20, 1897, length: 2517 meters
  • Stocken– Heiligkreuz , opened on May 20, 1897, length: 6,775 meters
  • Krontal – Neudorf, opened on November 27, 1910, length: 750 meters
  • Union – Hochwacht, opened October 20, 1911, length: 1670 meters
  • Hochwacht – Nest, opened April 20, 1913, length: 432 meters

In 1908 the Neudorf – Heiden line was licensed. However, this was never realized.
