The Appenzeller Bahnen (AB) are a Swiss railway company based in Herisau . It operates a network of railways in the cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden , Appenzell Ausserrhoden and St. Gallen .

The Appenzeller Bahnen operate their routes in three different gauges:

In 2006, the general assembly of the predecessor companies decided to merge the Appenzeller Bahnen with the Rorschach-Heiden-Bergbahn (RHB), the Bergbahn Rheineck-Walzenhausen (RhW) and the Trogenerbahn (TB) retrospectively to January 1, 2006. It became a Absorption merger chosen, in which the larger Appenzeller Bahnen AG took over the three other companies. Today's Appenzeller Bahnen AG is still the company founded in 1886 (entry in the commercial register July 26, 1886).

The Appenzeller Bibliobahn was a specialty : between 1988 and 2008, a railway wagon that had been converted into a library ran on the rail network of the Appenzeller Bahnen, which also covered the annual shunting costs.

The Appenzeller Bahnen are organized in the form of a private limited company in accordance with Article 620ff of the Code of Obligations. The share capital amounts to 15,600,000 Swiss francs and is completely divided into registered shares with a nominal value of one franc. Due to the development history and the associated mergers and acquisitions, the shares are now distributed as follows:

  • Canton of St. Gallen (11%)
  • Canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden (9%)
  • Canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden (4%)
  • City of St. Gallen (4%)
  • various municipalities and districts of the cantons of St. Gallen, Appenzell Ausserrhoden and Appenzell Innerrhoden (16%)

  • shares of the predecessor companies not yet exchanged (11%)

Diameter line

The Appenzell – St. Gallen – Trogen was a key project of the Appenzeller Bahnen to connect the St. Gallen – Trogen and St. Gallen – Gais – Appenzell lines at the St. Gallen train station by 2018 . The most important and largest sub-project was the construction of the 725-meter-long Ruckhalde tunnel to remove the rack section between St. Gallen and Riethüsli . The diameter line enables the 15-minute cycle between St. Gallen and Teufen and improves connections to the intercity trains to and from Zurich . The world record curve in the Ruckhalde fell victim to the new building, where the world's narrowest gear curve had passed with a radius of only 30 meters and a gradient of 90 per thousand.

The rolling stock is divided into

  1. the rolling stock of the meter gauge network , some with a gear
  2. the only railcar for the Rheineck – Walzenhausen route with a gauge of 1200 mm
  3. the standard-gauge rolling stock, partly with cogwheel, for the Rorschach – Heiden route
