Riethüsli is a district in the Swiss city of St. Gallen . It is located in the south of the city on the valley of the Wattbach , which forms the district, commune and canton border with the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

The landmark of the quarter is the Nestweier. The pond appears for the first time on a city map from 1830. When and for what purpose the pond was created is not known.

According to the statistical survey conducted by the canton of St. Gallen in 2014, 4423 people lived in Riethüsli at that time, with the proportion of Swiss citizens at 74%, slightly higher than the urban average of 70%.

traffic

The quarter is connected to the city center by trolley bus line 5 , bus line 10 and the Appenzeller Bahn . The district is intersected by the main traffic axis from St. Gallen to the Appenzellerland , the Teufenerstrasse, whereby in 2016 the traffic load on working days was an average of 13,764 vehicles. In order to curb the consequences of commuter traffic, a petition was made for the sub-tunneling of the district, which, however, had no results for a long time. In 2018, as part of the 17th road construction program, it was decided to build the so-called Teilspange, which provides for an underground motorway connection in the area of the freight station and the continuation of traffic in the direction of Teufen in a tunnel to Lustmühle. Completion is expected in 2030. The terrain rises sharply on both sides of Teufenerstrasse, with residential quarters located on the slope above all on the western side. The previously by both the road and the track of the Appenzell Railway intersected Quartierzentrum to after the commissioning of which was completed in October 2018 diameter line and jerk stockpile tunnels are new and more attractive.

schools

The quarter is strongly characterized by the location of the Commercial Vocational and Further Education Center St. Gallen (GBS) on Demutstrasse. The location in question is home to the St. Gallen School of Design , from which both the basic and advanced training departments are located. The department for technical professions in the fields of electrical engineering and computer science is also located here. The school opened in 1975. In 1976 the forecourt was decorated with a sculpture by the artist Rudolf Schawalder from Widnau. In 2009 the roof of the new Tal der Humut gymnasium collapsed shortly before the start of classes due to a construction fault in the roof structure under a freshly fallen snow load. The accident left no victims or injuries. Even after a lengthy process, it was not possible to determine who exactly was guilty of the error. The proceedings were discontinued, also to allow the blocked reconstruction of the gym.

The Riethüsli has a primary school consisting of several buildings. The ensemble was built between 1966 and 1974 and has been in need of renovation since the early 2000s. In 2008 a competition for the renovation was announced. However, the winning project was so expensive that it was decided to build a completely new school building. In 2011 a corresponding competition was announced and in 2012 a winning project was chosen. Due to budget problems, the project was subsequently overturned from budget planning and only repairs that could not be postponed were carried out. According to the latest status, the renovation work should now start in 2021.

Historical

The Liebeggweiher between 1900 and 1910.

From 1929 to 1962, the Riethüsli had a 40 m ski jumping hill on the slope west of Teufenerstrasse at the level of the Appenzeller Bahnen stop. The ski jump was operated by the Riethüsli Ski Club, which also organized night jumping on the hill. The hill record was set in 1954 with 42.5 m by the Swiss jumper Andreas Däscher. The ski jump was demolished in 1962 when a residential complex and a gas station were built in the area of the run-out.

In 1968, a little south of the former ski jump, the Liebeggweiher, which was built in 1860 right next to the Wattbach, was drained and heaped up because silt and odor emissions were a constant issue. Building land for a residential building was created on the site. In the area known as 'Liebegg', some small industrial companies had settled in the 1820s because of the easily usable hydropower. In 1860 the Liebeggweiher was laid out and a cardboard factory was built, which was converted into a timber sawmill in 1871, which was shut down in 1980. For a long time, the sawmill's electricity was generated by a turbine that was driven by the water from the Liebeggweiher, until it was drained for the reasons mentioned above. The saw was added to the inventory of the Swiss Society for the History of Technology and Industrial Culture in 2013.

The 'Scheffelstein' restaurant on a postcard from shortly after its establishment in 1904.

One of the few distinctive buildings in the Riethüsli was the 'Scheffelstein' restaurant for a long time. The building to the northeast of Nestweiher on the Ruhberg was built in 1904 and named after the memorial stone for the writer Joseph Victor von Scheffel that was erected further up on the slope in 1887 . Due to its prominent location and the magnificent architecture, the restaurant has become a distinctive St. Gallen landmark and part of the urban recreation area. One of the dining rooms was decorated with scenes from Scheffel's novel ' Ekkehard '. On August 19, 1943, the Scheffelstein burned down and the attic collapsed. During the reconstruction, the 'monumentality' was dispensed with and the building was given a conventional roof structure that still exists today. The restaurant business in the now more inconspicuous building was soon given up. Today apartments and commercial space are housed in the building.

Until 1918, the western part of the quarter belonged to the municipality of Straubenzell , which was then attached to St. Gallen , for example the Hofstetten part of the quarter with the Solitüdenhang.
