The Neudorf is a neighborhood group in the east district of the city of St. Gallen . This consists of the statistical quarters Achslen - Wilen and Stephanshorn - Zil - Kesselhalden . The neighboring district of St. Fiden shares the district association with Neudorf.

Structure and transport links

The group of quarters is quite heterogeneous and consists of different clearly defined parts: Achslen-Wilen, Stephanshorn, Kesselhalden, Zil and Guggeien. The district is divided partly by the main traffic axis to the east (Rorschacherstrasse), partly by topographical features such as the Höchsterwald, which separates the Guggeien district from Stephanshorn. The population was 8,460 in 2015.

The quarter can be reached with the trolleybus lines 1 and 2 , the bus lines 7, 8 and 9 and several post bus lines from the city ​​center . There is also a motorway connection to the A1 . The Neudorf is located at the eastern end of the city and borders the communities of Mörschwil , Untereggen and Eggersriet . In the city of St. Gallen itself, Neudorf borders the Heiligkreuz and St. Fiden - Notkersegg neighborhood groups (St. Fiden and Notkersegg were combined into a single neighborhood group in 2010). The border to the Heiligkreuz is formed by the Steinach , the border to Untereggen and Eggersriet by the Goldachtobel .

Schools, public buildings and institutions

There are several municipal schools and kindergartens in the district: primary school Halden, primary school Oberzil and the upper school center Zil, the former being combined with various kindergartens. The Notker der Flade secondary school is also located in Neudorf .

In Neudorf there are several important public buildings and facilities of the city of St. Gallen: The Paul-Grüninger-Stadion SC Brühl, the athletics track Neudorf, the indoor pool Blumenwies, the Natural History Museum St. Gallen , the Botanical Garden of St. Gallen and the style Ostfriedhof laid out in an English park. A private hospital belonging to the Hirslanden Klink Group is located in Stephanshorn. A little further to the east is the Oberwaid , reopened in 2012 , also a private health establishment with a wellness and conference hotel. There is also a retirement and nursing home in the district, the Notkerianum. This is still partly in an Art Nouveau villa, which was built in 1911 for a St. Gallen embroidery entrepreneur and sold to the Menzingen monastery after the embroidery bloom in 1924 and initially operated as a maternity and private clinic until the facility in the late 1970s Years passed into the possession of the Notkerianum Retirement and Nursing Home Association. One of the few other historical buildings in Neudorf is the parish church of St. Maria Neudorf, designed by Adolf Gaudy and built from 1913 to 1917.

With the Gallusmarkt, the district has a larger shopping center, which is located in Achslen-Wilen, which is heavily influenced by commercial operations and high-rise buildings designed by the architect Heinrich Graf.
