Its origins lie in the founding of the "hydropathic institute" by the doctor Theodor Hahn in 1845. Today the Oberwaid , which was newly built in 2012, is the hotel. The clinic. with its own spa and 140 rooms, a hotel of 4 * superior classification and a private clinic specializing in prevention , rehabilitation and after-care in the fields of psychosomatic medicine , orthopedics and cardiology .
history
1845 to 2012
In 1845 the doctor Theodor Hahn from Germany acquired the property “Untere Waid” with the associated “Gasthaus zur Waid” and after its remodeling opened a hydropathic institute. In order to meet the increasing demands, he sold the property in 1868 and bought the neighboring property called "Obere Waid". In 1870 the new company opened its doors under the name "Oberwaid". After the doctor's death in 1883, there were frequent changes of ownership and with it the offer of the house.
In 1930 a welfare association took over the property following the recommendation of St. Gallen Bishop Alois Scheiwiler , whereupon the "Oberwaid" started operating as a Caritas home. The Baldegger sisters , an order of women founded in 1830, which followed the rules of the order of Francis of Assisi and is now internationally present, were responsible for the operation . After the Baldegger sisters moved in, they changed the direction of the house into a spa with therapy and an educational center for retreats and other church courses as well as retreats. Furthermore, in 1931, in what was then the “Kurhaus Oberwaid”, a household school was attached, which until 2003 offered young women holistic training with a Christian human view of the world . In 1955, Baldegg Monastery acquired the entire property, as a result of which the external appearance of the "Oberwaid" changed through renovations and extensions and the house increasingly developed into a spa business.
In May 2007 the Baldegg Monastery sold with the confirmation of the St. Gallen Bishop Markus Büchel and the approval of the then Pope Benedict XVI. the property to the married couple Gabi and Heinrich Thorbecke. At the same time, the new stock corporation Oberwaid AG was created. The new sponsorship took over responsibility for the entire operation in January 2008.
Because the old building could no longer be saved due to the structural substance, those responsible decided to build a new one. As a result, the Kurhaus Oberwaid ceased operations on November 15, 2008, and the Baldegger sisters ended their 78-year career in St. Gallen.
On December 19, 2008, the construction project for the replacement of the "Oberwaid" was submitted. The Carlos Martinez architecture firm was commissioned with the project . The owner family invested a total of over 85 million Swiss francs in the new Oberwaid building.
From 2012
After a planning and construction phase of almost five years, the new "Oberwaid" opened in November 2012 as a six-story building with an underground car park. The obesity center of the St. Gallen Cantonal Hospital has been located here since January 2013 . In 2015 Doris Straus was appointed CEO and medical director at the same time. Christopher Rossbach has been the director responsible for the hotel industry since February 2019.
Since 2015, Oberwaid has had the service mandate of the Canton of St. Gallen for psychosomatic rehabilitation. In April 2018, she also received the cantonal service contract for inpatient cardiac rehabilitation.
architecture
The Carlos Martinez architects' office was responsible for the design of the new Oberwaid building, which was completed after a planning phase of over 18 months and a construction period of almost three years . Out of respect for the long history of the complex, a lot of care was given to the trees in the park and the preservation of the Maria Grotto. The shape of the building plan also represents the history and tradition of the Oberwaid. From a bird's eye view, the building looks like a dew-cross and thus pays tribute to the long-term commitment of the Baldegger sisters. In addition, the shape contributes to the fact that the approx. 38,000 m² plot in St. Gallen Neudorf is divided into three zones: the driveway in the northeast with a concave facade, the park in the southwest and the garden in the southeast.
The interior designer Claudio Carbone was entrusted with the interior design of the hotel. One of the main focuses was the reproduction of the tradition and history of the regional textile industry in Eastern Switzerland .
