Markus Büchel (Bishop)
Markus Büchel (born August 9, 1949 in Rüthi ) is a Swiss clergyman , Roman Catholic bishop of St. Gallen and apostolic administrator of the two Appenzell . He is the 11th bishop of the diocese of St. Gallen since it was founded after the split from the dual diocese of Chur- St. Gallen in 1847.
Life
Markus Büchel comes from a farm in Rüthi in the Rhine Valley ; he has a brother and three sisters. After attending the Marienburg high school of the Steyler missionaries in Rheineck - Thal (1962–1968) and the Einsiedeln collegiate school (1968–1970, Matura), he studied philosophy and theology at the University of Freiburg (Switzerland) . On April 3, 1976, he was ordained a priest by the St. Gallen Bishop Joseph Hasler .
After the vicariate in St. Gallen-Neudorf from 1976 to 1982 he was cathedral vicar at the cathedral parish of St. Gallen from 1982 to 1988 . In 1988 Markus Büchel became pastor in Flawil , and in 1992 he was elected Dean of the Gossau Dean's Office. In 1995 he officiated as episcopal vicar , head of the pastoral office in St. Gallen and head of pastoral care. In 1999 he became dean of the cathedral and thus head of the St. Gallen cathedral chapter .
On July 4, 2006, he was elected bishop of the diocese of St. Gallen and just one day later was confirmed by Pope Benedict XVI. On the day of prayer , September 17, 2006, he received the episcopal ordination from his predecessor, Bishop Ivo Fürer , who had submitted his resignation due to old age ; Co -consecrators were Bishop Amédée Grab von Chur and Bishop Kurt Koch von Basel . Markus Büchel's motto is: In gaudio et spe / In joy and hope .
At the 297th Ordinary General Assembly of the Swiss Bishops 'Conference (SBK) from September 3 to 5, 2012, Büchel was elected chairman of the Swiss Bishops' Conference for the 2013 to 2015 term. He was the successor to Norbert Brunner , the Bishop of Sitten . Büchel's successor was Charles Morerod , Bishop of Lausanne, Geneva and Friborg on January 1, 2016 .
In August 2015, Büchel stated that at the time of the Bible , current knowledge about homosexuality as a sexual orientation that could not be freely selected and as a predisposition was still unknown. The sexuality was a "gift from God" and the Roman Catholic Church must face up to the historical burden in dealing with homosexuality.
He supports the corporate responsibility initiative .
