Joseph Hasler

Joseph (us) Hasler (born April 22, 1900 in Altstätten SG ; † December 20, 1985 in Appenzell ) was the Roman Catholic Bishop of St. Gallen .

After attending St. Fidelis High School in Stans , he studied theology at the University of Friborg (Switzerland) from 1921 to 1925 . He was ordained a priest on March 20, 1926 in St. Gallen . From 1926 to 1932 he worked as a chaplain in Appenzell and then worked as a pastor in Eschenbach SG (1933–1944) and Andwil SG (1944–1948) before moving to Wil SG from 1948 to 1957 as a city pastor and rural canon .

On April 16, 1957, he was elected Bishop of St. Gallen after his predecessor Joseph Meile died in office on January 6. On May 26, he donated the later Cardinal and former apostolic nuncio in Switzerland Gustavo Testa , the episcopal ordination ; Co- consecrators were Christian Caminada , Bishop of Chur , and Franz von Streng , Bishop of Basel and Lugano .

In 1975 he submitted his resignation due to old age, resigned from his office on March 24, 1976 and then worked again as a chaplain in Appenzell until his death.

Act

Hasler was one of the founders of the fasting sacrifice of the Swiss Catholics and at the Second Vatican Council he advocated keeping the Latin language in the liturgy . In 1957 he was made an honorary doctorate from the University of Friborg (Switzerland).

At Synod 72 he warned in a sermon: “It is wrong to split up into progressives and conservatives, because we have to be both together. The only yardstick for our actions is the gospel. "

From 1963 to 1985 Joseph Hasler was Prior of the German-Swiss Section of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
