About this picture

Wil is a town and municipality in the canton of St. Gallen . It has a small town character and is an important center for the west of the canton and Toggenburg . At the end of 2018, Wil had 23,966 inhabitants. With 74,550 inhabitants (according to FSO 2020), the Wil agglomeration is the second largest metropolitan area in Eastern Switzerland . Since January 1, 2013, the former political municipality Bronschhofen belongs to the city of Wil.

The prince abbots of St. Gallen resided in the Hof zu Wil for more than 500 years , which is why the city is also called the abbots ' city .

history

In 754, Wil and the nearby towns of Rickenbach and Züberwangen were first mentioned in the Henau document . In 1226 the Counts of Toggenburg donated the city to the St. Gallen Monastery.

In 1292 the Habsburgs raided the city of Wil and burned it down. The residents were forced to move to Schwarzenbach , which is three kilometers south of Wil. In 1301 the Habsburgs gave Wil back to the St. Gallen monastery . For this, Schwarzenbach was razed.

Since 1226, Wil has remained the undisputed property of the prince abbots of St. Gallen - interrupted only by one episode when the rebellious Appenzellers took over the town for a short time in 1407.

In 1451 the prince abbot entered into an alliance with the federal locations of Zurich, Lucerne, Glarus and Schwyz, making Wil the seat of the federal bailiffs.

In the second half of the 15th century, Prince Abbot Ulrich Rösch (1463–1491) ensured an economic boom by granting additional weekly markets . Today a street in Wil is named after him.

Between 1525 and 1531, the Reformation also found supporters in Wil. With the victory of the Catholic places in the Battle of Kappel , this development was reversed in 1531. The rule of the abbots did not end until 1798, when the old Confederation collapsed and the princely country subsequently declared itself independent.

Wil was in the Helvetic Republic from 1798 to 1803 part of the canton of Säntis and an independent municipality. In 1803 the city became part of the newly founded canton of St. Gallen. Since 1831 it was also the district capital. Today Wil is the capital of the constituency of the same name.

On September 28, 1855, Wil was opened up by the Sankt Gallisch-Appenzell Railway . In 1984 Wil received the Wakker Prize for the integral structural preservation of the old town.

The local football club FC Wil was in the highest league, the Super League , from 2002 to 2004 and won the Swiss Cup in 2004 .

On July 3, 2011, the voters of Wil and Bronschhofen resolved the merger to form a new political municipality Wil on January 1, 2013 with a yes share of 63.2 and 78.3 percent respectively.

On November 4, 2012, Susanne Hartmann (CVP), although not supported by her party, was elected the first woman mayor of Wil. Susanne Hartmann was the first woman in the canton of St. Gallen who was allowed to preside over a city.

Economy and tourism

Industry

In addition to many medium-sized, small and very small companies, Wil also has a number of larger, large, partly international companies, also in the industrial sector. Companies known beyond the region include Stihl & Co , Larag AG, Camion Transport AG , Brändle AG, Heimgartner Fahnen AG, Schmolz + Bickenbach and Kindlimann AG. In terms of the number of employees, the secondary economic sector makes up the smaller share of the Wiler economy in the city of Wil - around 3,100 people are employed in this sector, while the tertiary sector employs around 10,600 people. Only around 80 people are then employed in the primary sector. This ratio therefore differs from that of the canton of St.Gallen: Measured in terms of employment, the canton's economic structure is strongly influenced by the primary (agriculture and forestry) and secondary sectors (industry and processing, supply and disposal, construction, mining) embossed.

tourism

Old town of Wil
Wiler Tower

The old town is considered to be the best preserved in eastern Switzerland. The view from the Stadtweier up to the eastern silhouette of the old town is worth seeing . The missing "h" in Wil's Stadtwei (h) er has now been added directly on site. The pedestrian promenade from the Schwanenkreisel towards the old town is where most of the shops are. Every Saturday there is a market in the alleys of the old town. On July 8, 2006, a 37 m high observation tower, the Wiler Tower , was inaugurated on the Hofberg; a wooden structure with a double spiral staircase and three X-supports.

Culture

The cultural offer in the city of Wil is diverse. Important locations for cultural activities are the Tonhalle, the Kunsthalle and the City Museum. Wil also has a city library and a toy library.

Hofchilbi

The Hofchilbi takes place annually in the old town of Wil. In 1540, under Abbot Diethelm Blarer von Wartensee, the large, still existing chapel was added to the courtyard and was inaugurated on July 25th.

This church consecration was then celebrated annually as Hofchilbi until 1722. In view of the bad times, the festive, secular part was canceled. In 1972 the Wil Hofbrauerei decided to revive the Hofchilbi. Since then, this festival has taken place every year, organized by KTV Wil Handball.

In the oldest document that Wil mentions, on August 6, 754, the donation of the goods of the free farmer Rotbald to the monastery of St. Gallen is reported. As a loan for these goods, it was agreed that each year 30 buckets of beer are to be delivered along with various natural products such as grain and pigs. The Hofchilbi takes up this tradition by serving this beer interest to the residents of Wil. According to today's standards, 30 buckets of beer correspond to approx. 1,125 liters. These are sold to the festival visitors of the Hofchilbi. The proceeds from this former free beer flow - among other things - into the fund of the Hof zu Wil Foundation.

Openair rockamweier

Every year in mid-June, the two-day openair rockamweier takes place at Wiler Stadtweier with free admission. Organized for the first time in 2001, the festival is now gaining popularity beyond regional borders. Music greats like Popa Chubby from the USA or Lazuli from France have played at the festival.

Gare de Lion

Long-established known as Remise Wil and renovated in 2008, a cultural venue called Gare de Lion is operated near the train station, offering a wide range of concerts, theater and readings.

Town twinning

Wil has been twinned with Groß Döbern , Poland since 1992.
