Economic history

The former Benninger area in the center of Oberuzwil in 2009

For a long time, the textile industry was an important industry in Oberuzwil. The companies Heer & Co. and the Dierauer brothers played a key role in this. The Benninger company operated an assembly hall in Oberuzwil, in which the Schützengarten brewery also had a warehouse. The former Hefti tannery also belonged to the same area . The buildings were demolished in 2008 and multi-family houses were built on in 2010 and 2011.

The company Heer & Co. relocated from Thal to Oberuzwil in 1838 and grew strongly until the turn of the century. In 1920 450 people were employed. In 1937 Heer & Co. was taken over by Dollfus-Mieg & Co. and employed only 250 people in the 1960s. In 1987, the company was bought by J. Müller and has since operated under the name of HC Färberei Oberuzwil AG . As a result of the decline of the textile industry in Europe, the company was closed on August 23, 2002 and was deleted from the commercial register on September 30, 2004. In 2009 it was announced that the buildings on the site would be demolished. With the 47 meter high chimney , the last factory building was demolished on April 1, 2011. The area was built on multi-family houses.

The Gebrüder Dierauer AG emerged from a cloth shop opened in 1847 and a shoe factory built in 1870, which was subsequently expanded considerably. The company was sold in 1971 and came into the possession of Fredy Herzog in 1982, who continues the textile business under the current name of Diro's AG .

Current situation

There are a few craft and commercial businesses in Oberuzwil. In addition, local economic policy focuses on future-oriented small and medium-sized enterprises. The largest employers, however, are the two global companies Benninger and Bühler from Uzwil. These are approached by buses from Bichwil and Oberuzwil.

The 2,720 people living and working in Oberuzwil (as of December 31, 2007) are distributed across the 3 sectors as follows:

  • 1st sector (agriculture): 119
  • 2nd sector (industry): 975 (552 of which in the metal industry)
  • 3rd sector (services): 1264

The workers employed in the municipality are distributed as follows:

  • 1st sector (agriculture): 179
  • 2nd sector (industry): 481
  • 3rd sector (services): 811

traffic

Oberuzwil is on cantonal road no. 8 ( main road 430) between Gossau and Wil . In the municipality, this road leads past Riggenschwil, through Oberuzwil (Flawilerstrasse and Wilerstrasse) and then along the Bettenauerweiher. The canton road No. 38 (Hauptstrasse 444), which begins at the canton border between Bischofszell and Niederbüren, runs through the Oberuzwil Bahnhofstrasse and ends in the canton road No. 8. The canton road No. 54 connects Niederuzwil with Flawil and leads through the hamlet of Wilen- Watt. A section of the cantonal road no. 10 (main road 431) between Lütisburg and Flawil also leads through the Oberuzwil area, at the height of Ramsau and Oberrindal. The remaining roads in the municipality are municipal roads.

With the construction of the autobahn and the Oberbüren-Uzwil junction, a four-lane road with separate lanes between Oberbüren and Lindenplatz in Uzwil was built in 1968 as a feeder road. A continuation to Oberuzwil was originally planned, but the expansion of the missing section between Lindenstrasse and the municipality border with Oberuzwil was rejected several times by the people of Uzwil.

Oberuzwil is located at the SBB -Bahnlinie Wil-St. Gallen . Uzwil station, which is run by the municipalities of Oberuzwil and Uzwil, is served hourly by long-distance trains on the Lausanne - St. Gallen route. Oberuzwil is connected to the Flawil, Uzwil and Wil train stations by Postbuses.

history

The Uze in the center of Oberuzwil

Little is known about the early history of Oberuzwil: Oberuzwil is likely to be traced back to the settlement of the area by the Alemanni in the 6th or 7th century , with an Alemann named Uto or Uzo responsible for the name of his settlement ( = Uzzinwilare ). He thus covered the whole of today's Niederuzwil, Uzwil and Oberuzwil area with several farms. Oberuzwil ( Uzzinwilare ) was first mentioned in 819 and 824, Bichwil ( Pichilinwilare ) and Wilen ( Wila ) in 865.

Sometime in the period between 1222 and 1259, the castle of the nobles of Eppenberg was built on the highest point of the Eppenberg, but burned down and destroyed for the first time in 1403 during the Appenzell Wars. It will then be rebuilt by Ludwig von Eppenberg . It was destroyed again in 1521, this time by a lightning strike. A lack of funds prevented the reconstruction and finally the noble von Eppenberg family died out completely around 1620. The ruins of the castle were used, among other things, for the construction of the Catholic parish church in Bichwil in 1808, so that today there are no more noticeable traces of the castle.

Around 1464, at the behest of the prince abbey of St. Gallen near Bettenau (Gde. Jonschwil ), the moorland to the Bettenauerweiher is dammed by building a dam . This pond is supposed to supply the kitchen of the St.Gallen monastery with fresh fish. In later years ownership of the pond changed several times, but in 1932 it was completely assigned to the municipality of Oberuzwil following a border regulation. The pond today has an estimated volume of around 200,000 m³.

One of the historical landmarks of Oberuzwil is the Evangelical Reformed Church, which was planned and built in 1765/66 by the well-known master builder Hans Ulrich Grubenmann (1709–1783). Master builder Grubenmann donated the font, which is still in use today and can be viewed in the church. Since 1966 the church has been under federal protection of the federal preservation authorities.

With the mediation act of February 19, 1803, Napoléon Bonaparte laid down the future structure of the Swiss Confederation . In this document, the canton of St. Gallen (as the successor to the canton of Säntis ) was defined, thus creating the legal basis for the municipality of Oberuzwil. As a result, the villages of Oberuzwil, Niederglatt, Wilen, Riggenschwil and Bichwil were formed into the municipality of Oberuzwil on July 24, 1803.

On the initiative of the Protestant pastor and some active citizens, the Oberuzwil savings storage facility was opened on January 1, 1851 . This bank is still active today under the name Clientis Bank Oberuzwil AG .

Between 1934 and 1935, the Zurich architect Fritz Metzger built the Catholic Church of St. Gallus . It is built in the New Building style and is considered the most consistent one-room church of this time.

At the Flurhof ammunition depot, which is located between Oberuzwil and the hamlet of Bisacht, the traitor Ernst Schrämli was shot by a firing squad of the Swiss Army on the night of November 10th, 1942 . The 23-year-old Schrämli had stolen some grenades for a German agent and passed on drawings of secret military installations he had made himself for a small fee. He was the first of a total of seventeen traitors who were executed in Switzerland during World War II . This event was written down by Niklaus Meienberg and processed by Richard Dindo in the documentary of the same name The shooting of traitor Ernst S. According to contemporary witnesses, the execution took place in Wildberg.

In January 2008, Niederglatt's status as a local parish was revoked by the canton of St. Gallen. In October 2009, the Oberuzwil community was renamed Oberuzwil-Dorf.

The coat of arms gives references to the industry and old noble families, whose castles and possessions were partly in today's municipal area. The mill wheel and the silver wave bar appear in a club flag from 1938. The heraldic figures of the Gielen von Glattburg and the noble von Eppenberg appear in the base of the shield .
