The word Burron Inferior first appeared around 1100, and in 1275 the German word Niederun Burron (for Burron Inferior ) was mentioned. At that time, the abbot of St. Gallen was the landlord of the Niederbüren area. In the 13th century Niederbüren had its own church. 1761–1763 a new church, St. Michael, was built in the baroque style. The architect was Johann Michael Beer von Bildstein, the stucco was created by Johann Georg Gigl . Niederbüren has been an independent political municipality in the canton of St. Gallen since 1803.
There were three or four castles in what is now the municipality, the Ratenberg , Geissberg , Lindenberg and Hertenberg . Today only remains of the Lindenberg wall can be seen.
