Niederhelfenschwil is a municipality in the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland .
It consists of the villages of Niederhelfenschwil , Lenggenwil and Zuckenriet . The name of the municipality is considered the longest name of all Swiss municipalities.
The community
The community lies on a plateau north of the Thur between the towns of Wil and Bischofszell . The area was under the control of the abbot of the St. Gallen monastery until the canton was founded . The political community Niederhelfenschwil includes the villages Niederhelfenschwil, Lenggenwil and Zuckenriet and the hamlets Enkhüseren, Dietenwil, Dägetschwil, Eggetsbüel, Sonnenberg, Dietrüti, Taa, Hueb and Laupen.
The villages can be reached by postbus from the Uzwil and Wil train stations. Rural settlements and larger forest areas shape the image of the former Drumlin landscape. Many new residential buildings have changed their structural character significantly in recent years.
Numerous SMEs offer jobs and training positions . Shops in all three villages guarantee basic supplies.
Each of the three villages has a kindergarten and a primary school. The upper school pupils are taught in the central school building in Sproochbrugg (together with the neighboring community of Zuzwil ). A club life offers opportunities for youth development, sport, music, culture and entertainment.
The three villages of the parish
Niederhelfenschwil
The village of Niederhelfenschwil (Weiler des Helfotes), which gives the entire municipality its name and houses the municipal administration, is located in the east of the municipality and borders the canton of Thurgau . Niederhelfenschwil was first mentioned in a document in 817/818. In the center of the village is the baroque parish church (1786). It is one of the most beautiful rural sacred buildings in Eastern Switzerland and is referred to as the “little cathedral of the diocese”. To the west of the village on the edge of the Hohrainwald and on the Oberbürer municipality is the Glattburg convent with its unique rococo church. South below the village there is a tranquil hamlet, the Kobesenmühle. The artist and philosopher Wilhelm Lehmann (1884–1974) lived and worked there . His life's work is publicly accessible in the exhibition of the old mill.
Zuckenriet
The village of Zuckenriet (Riet des Zucko) is located in the northern part of the municipality. Zuckenriet is mentioned for the first time in 782 as a gift to the St. Gallen monastery . Zuckenriet Castle (Spiegelberg) towers high above the village, a mighty half-timbered building with a striking hipped roof. It was built in the 11th and 12th centuries under Abbot Ulrich von Eppenstein and served as the seat of the prince's administrator. It later came into the possession of the Löw von Zuckenriet family. The current building and the Gothic castle chapel date from the 15th century. The castle has been privately owned since 1807.
Lenggenwil
The village of Lenggenwil also owes its name to an Alemanni , the settler Linko. The descendants bequeathed his estate to the St. Gallen monastery in 903. The small baroque parish church and the striking rectory characterize the village center. Remnants of the former glacier landscape can still be seen in various small moor areas outside the village. Lenggenwil has made a name for itself in recent years with its theater and open-air performances and the annual carnival parade attracts thousands of visitors. Active youth and village associations are behind these major events.
Attractions
The Zuckenriet Castle is particularly worth seeing (only from the outside).
