Compulsory schooling ends after finishing upper secondary school . In parts of Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein , it is also referred to as a secondary school .

The high school is usually attended from 12 to 15 years of age. It lasts three years in German- and French-speaking Switzerland , and four years in Canton Ticino and Liechtenstein.

In the cooperative and in the integrated model , the students attend lessons in core classes as well as in performance-differentiated level courses.

The names of the upper school schools differ from canton to canton. An overview of the types of schools at lower secondary level in the individual Swiss cantons is provided in the table in the lower secondary level in the article on the education system in Switzerland. In the Principality of Liechtenstein the schools are called Realschule , Oberschule and Gymnasium lower school .
