The Liechtensteinische Gymnasium (LG) was founded in 1937 as Collegium Marianum by the Marist school brothers as a private school in Vaduz . The grammar school has been a public school supported by the State of Liechtenstein since 1981 .

The number of pupils has risen continuously since the mid-1980s (girls have only been admitted since the late 1960s) and is currently 720. The average class size in the lower grades is 20.7 and in the upper grades 17.0.

Lower level

The lower grades comprise three school years ( grades 6–8), their grades are designated US1, US2 and US3.

From the Realschule there are three transition options to the Liechtenstein Gymnasium:

  • after the 1st year of Realschule to the 2nd year of Gymnasium (US2)
  • after the 3rd year of Realschule in the 4th year of Gymnasium (OS1)
  • after the 4th year of Realschule to the 4th year of Gymnasium (OS1)

The total number of hours in the lower level is 104; the students are taught 34 hours per week in US1 and US2; in US3 the number of hours is 36.

Lessons in the lower grades are religion , Realien I ( geography and history ), Realien II (natural science), computer science (US1), German , English , French (from US2), Latin (US3), technical and textile design (US1 and US2), Artistic Design , Music , Sports and Mathematics . In addition, there is one hour of life studies (class hour) per school year.

There are no options for the students in the lower grades with regard to the subjects mentioned, but additional subjects can be taken if they choose.

Upper school

The upper level comprises four school years (grades 9-12), its classes are designated OS1, OS2, OS3 and OS4.

The total number of hours in the upper school is 140; the students are taught 35 hours a week per school year.

There are five different profiles to choose from in the upper level:

The lessons in the upper level consist of the following elements:

  • a number of basic subjects that are the same for all students (in OS1 and OS2 29, in OS3 and OS4 26 hours per week)
  • several profile subjects, depending on the chosen profile (six or five hours per week)
  • In OS3 and OS4: compulsory elective courses that are intended to counteract specialization through the profiles (four hours per week)

Several basic subjects are mandatory for all students. The following are taught throughout: German, English, French, mathematics, sports. In addition, there is an hour of life studies (class hour) per year.

Some subjects are only taught in individual grades:

  • in OS1: Biology , Economics / Law, History, Art Education, Music Education, Religious Studies and Ethics
  • in OS2: Biology, Chemistry, Geography, History, Art or Music Education, Religious Studies and Ethics
  • in OS3: biology, chemistry, geography, art or music education, philosophy
  • in OS4: geography, economics / law, history, religious studies and ethics, philosophy

There are at least two profile subjects per profile, one of which is taught with a significantly higher number of hours per week (marked with * in the following overview). The profile subjects are:

  • Lingua: Latin *, Italian
  • New languages: Spanish *, Latin or Italian language
  • Art, music and education: artistic creation / making music *, education / psychology
  • Economics and law: business administration / law *, accounting (OS1 and OS2) or economics (OS3 and OS4), integrated subject economics
  • Mathematics and Natural Sciences: Computer Science; the subjects mathematics, physics *, biology *, chemistry and geography have more hours than in the compulsory area

Matura

Those who want to be admitted to the Matura must have successfully completed class OS4 and received a positive assessment in two specialist theses.

Written examination subjects are:

  • German
  • English
  • French
  • mathematics
  • Profile subject with the highest number of hours (in art, music and pedagogy , music-making and visual design are tested in writing, pedagogy / psychology orally)

Oral examination subjects are:

  • German, philosophy, religious studies and ethics or history
  • Mathematics, biology, physics, chemistry, geography or economics / law
  • English or French,
  • Italian, Spanish or Latin
  • Profile subject of free choice (none that have already been examined as a basic subject!)
