Placidus Bridler

Placidus Bridler or Plazidus Bridler ( baptismal name : Theoderich Bridler ; * February 15, 1613 in Bischofszell , † September 15, 1679 in Wil im Thurgau ) was a Benedictine priest , theologian and canon lawyer .

Life

Bridler's schooling began in Constance in 1624 and continued in Rorschach in 1625 . On February 17, 1627 he came to the St. Gallen Monastery , but had to move to the Murbach Monastery on September 28, 1629 because of the plague . On February 5, 1630 he was able to return to St. Gallen and on March 7 of the same year he was able to enter the novitiate . He made his profession there on March 9, 1631 and then completed his higher studies in St. Gallen and in the Neu St. Johann monastery . He then began studying theology on May 5, 1634, which he completed on May 4, 1637. In this study he received on 3 March 1635 ordination as subdeacon , on 15 February 1636 to the deacon and finally on March 7, 1637, the priestly ordination .

Bridler initially worked as a theology teacher in St. Gallen before he was sent to the University of Ingolstadt to study canon law in 1639, together with the later Prince Abbot Gallus Alt . From 1640 they continued their studies in Rome. There he received his doctorate in law on January 29, 1642 . Abbot Pius Reher appointed him professor for canon law and subprior in Rorschach on his return . In 1646 he returned to the monastery of St. Gallen as a brother instructor and professor of canon law. In January 1648 he was made an official .

In 1651 Bridler exchanged the office of official for a position as full professor of canon law at the University of Salzburg . As early as 1653 he returned to St. Gallen, where he was again a teacher of canon law in 1654 and an official again in 1656. On December 8, 1656 he was appointed governor of St. Gallen, then on January 1, 1661 as governor of Wil .

Bridler suffered a stroke on March 18, 1678 and was subsequently released from his post in October 1678, but remained in Wil. He died there a year later.
