Gallus Jakob Alt (born September 10, 1610 in Oberriet , † March 4, 1687 in St. Gallen ) was as Gallus II from 1654 to 1687 Prince Abbot of St. Gallen .

Life

Born and raised in Oberriet in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley , the boy received his education at the Latin school in Appenzell. On September 8, 1628, Jakob Alt made his profession in the Benedictine abbey in St.Gallen and was given the monastery name Gallus. He was ordained a priest on February 16, 1636 . In Ingolstadt (1639/40) and Rome (1640/42) he devoted himself to studying law together with Placidus Bridler . In 1642 he acquired the title of Doctor iuris canonici (Doctor of Canon Law) in the Holy City . Returning to St. Gallen, Gallus went through the monastic hierarchy of offices. In 1645 he became governor of the monastic possessions in Ehaben , from 1647 he was subprior in St. Gallen, in 1650 prior and governor in Neu St. Johann im Thurtal. In 1652 Gallus became the deputy dean of his abbot Pius Reher. When he died on September 9, 1654, Gallus Alt was chosen on December 17 of the same year, who was the second bearer of this name after the founder, Gallus . Confirmation by Pope Alexander VII. Chigi followed in 1655 and the solemn Benediction on May 7, 1656.
