In the late 1980s, Popa Chubby made frequent appearances on the New York subway . His appearances in the blues club Manny's Carwash enabled him to play with various blues artists traveling through. Because white journalists criticized him as a white blues musician, he claims the only major obstacle he has ever faced was "reverse racism." Popa Chubby also toured with blues musicians such as Earl King , Albert King and James Cotton .
His 1995 debut album on OKeh Records , Booty & The Beast, alienated many blues connoisseurs. Some classified him as a rock musician because of his appearance and his pseudonym . In fact, Popa Chubby's music moved away from the tradition of mainstream blues. His music contains hard rock elements, which are based on his preference for the Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath recordings from the mid-1970s.
