history

Thurgau

The neighboring Thurgau was a common rule , i.e. a subject area without rights that was administered jointly by the federal city-states. After long negotiations between the federal city-states, road construction between Wil and Winterthur began in 1781. The route via Elgg met Zurich's desire for the most direct route possible, while Bern wanted an inexpensive route via Frauenfeld.

St. Gallen

Ulrich Rösch , Abbot of the St. Gallen Monastery , had a road built between Rorschach and St. Gallen, which was completed in 1487. His successor Beda Angehrn promoted road construction in the 18th century and initiated the expansion of the Fürstenlandstrasse from Rorschach through St. Gallen to Wil, which was completed in 1774. This road connected St. Gallen with the Swiss Confederation . A wooden bridge was built over the Thur near Oberbüren and a customs house was erected there. Even before the 18th century, a gravel road connected Gossau to Wil over the Bettenauerweiher .

The road law of the canton of St. Gallen, passed in 1833 and valid from 1834, declared Fürstenlandstrasse to be state road «1. Class », which was from then on administered by the canton. The expansion of the St. Gallen road network was financed by way money until 1848.

Maillart Bridge between Zuzwil and Henau am Felsegg

In the 1930s, a new straight road made of concrete was built from Wil to Gossau with junctions in Zuzwil , Henau, Oberbüren and Niederwil. With the construction of the motorway , the section between Zuzwil and Oberbüren was abolished; From Henau the autobahn uses its route and the remaining section between Zuzwil and Henau over the Thur bridge built by Robert Maillart in 1933/34 was declassified to a side street, the following still concreted hull is now a cultural asset; Hauptstrasse 7 has since been running again along the original Fürstenlandstrasse between Zuzwil and Oberbüren .

course

The street begins in Basel. It leads along the Rhine via Rheinfelden AG and Koblenz to Zurzach . In Glattfelden, the main road becomes the cantonal A50 motorway for around three kilometers , which is also signposted as main road 7.

She leaves the Rhine and crosses between Eglisau and Bulach of Schaffhausen to Zurich leading Hauptstrasse 4 . It continues over the pass called Wagenbreche to Winterthur. At Winterthur- Wülflingen the main road crosses the A1 and in the city center of Winterthur, the main road 7 crosses with the main roads 1 and 15 . While Hauptstrasse 1 continues to Kreuzlingen , Hauptstrasse 7 continues via Elgg to Wängi and Matzingen . From Matzingen to the end point Rorschach, Hauptstrasse 7 runs on a route similar to the A1. It continues to Wil and Gossau . As the Fürstenlandstrasse , it continues to St. Gallen Bruggen . There the street crosses the Sitter over the Fürstenlandbrücke.

The road continues through St. Gallen to Lake Constance to Rorschach, from where it leads, together with Hauptstrasse 13, to St. Margrethen. The 13 continues to Graubünden, while the 7 leads to the border to Austria at Höchst.
