Staad is a village in the political municipality of Thal in the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland and, together with Buechen, forms a unit and a parish .

geography

Staad is located on Lake Constance on the state road and on the Rorschach – St. Margrethen , Buechen, which is moved away from the lake, is a little higher immediately north of the A1 motorway . Road, railroad and the shores of Lake Constance prevented the development of a compact village center. The blue-green Staader sandstone , which is quarried near Schloss Wartensee , is well known.

history

There was a chapel in Buechen as early as the late Middle Ages , which was demolished in 1966. In 1709 the evangelical church Buechen was inaugurated for the believers in Altenrhein and Staad. The residents of Staad lived from fishing and mining sandstone in Buechen. There has been a station on the Rorschach – Rheineck railway line since 1858, and the port since 1902. From 1874 to 1940 the Egger bell foundry was active in Staad. After 1900 the appearance of artificial stone led to an economic slump, and in 1920 an artificial stone company started operations. In 1933 the Catholic parish of Buechen-Staad was founded and in 1968 the new parish church on the Wartbüchel was consecrated. Staad has been growing together with the expanding Buechen since 1970.

Attractions

  • The castles Blatten, Greifenstein and Risegg in the Buechen district are striking:
  • The Roman Catholic Christ the King's Church, a modern central building with concave and convex wall shells that, when viewed from above, simulates a crown, stands on a hill near Staad . The church was built in 1967 according to plans by the architects Bächtold + Baumgartner and inaugurated on March 24, 1968. The oval tower contains a Salve Regina bell in the strike tone sequence Es 1 - g 1 - b 1 - c 2 .
  • The Hundertwasser market hall is located at the roundabout between Staad and Altenrhein. The Altenrhein market hall was built between 1998 and 2002 based on the idea and concept of the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser . It was planned by the architect Peter Pelikan . The four gold-plated tower domes are an eye-catcher. On the ground floor there is the hall with colorful conical columns. It is also used for events. There is also a sound and light show about Hundertwasser's architecture. The top floor is green and accessible.
