Merger plans
In 2007, Rorschach , Rorschacherberg and Goldach examined a merger to form a “city on the lake” with around 25,000 inhabitants, which would have resulted in one of the largest cities in the canton of St. Gallen. After a merger in Goldach turned out to be politically unenforceable due to the lower tax rate , only a merger of Rorschach and Rorschacherberg was up for discussion, which was rejected by Rorschacherberg at the end of 2008. In Rorschach, however, the merger was strongly supported, as it would have resulted in major tax cuts.
In 2014, another fundamental vote was carried out on the merger of the three municipalities to form the “City on the Lake”. The aim of this vote was to give the municipal councils an order for an in-depth examination and to carry out a definitive vote on the merger within two years. This basic vote was again, like the previous one, clearly rejected by the communities of Goldach and Rorschacherberg and accepted by the city of Rorschach with a clear majority.
