Rüthi (officially called Rüthi (Rhine Valley) until 1994 ) is a political municipality in the cultural landscape of the St. Gallen Rhine Valley in the canton of St. Gallen in eastern Switzerland . Politically, Rüthi belongs to the Rheintal constituency .

geography

The municipality of Rüthi is located at the foot of the Hoher Kasten mountain in the Rhine Valley between Altstätten and Buchs SG . In the east, the Rhine forms the municipal boundary , which is also the Swiss border with Austria . In the north the municipality borders on Oberriet , in the south on Lienz , an exclave of the municipality Altstätten.

history

Grave finds testify that the municipality was already settled in the Neolithic . Alemanni settled in the area from the 7th century and cleared forest areas to make the land arable . Hence the place name (from Middle High German riute - roden).

The first documentary mention can be found in a document of the St. Gallen monastery from June 5, 820. Since 1292 the Pfäfers monastery was the landlord of the place. In 1538 the rule of the monastery ended when it was sold to the courtiers of Rüthi. Rüthi has existed as a political municipality since the canton of St. Gallen was founded in 1803.

Recurring floods often affected the place, especially in the years 1762, 1868, 1871 and 1890. The place also suffered from major fires in 1887 and 1890 . After the Rhine regulation , only the Rhine valley inland canal crossing the village of Rüthi was occasionally a danger with its flooding. For this reason, a project for flood protection and renaturation of the narrow canal was implemented between 2006 and 2008.
