history

Ragaz was originally a farming village. The place gained importance through the construction of the Palais Hof Ragaz . In the 19th century, the spring water from Bad Pfäfers in the Tamina Gorge was directed to Ragaz, and the community has been known as a health resort ever since. In 1937 the place was renamed Bad Ragaz. Today Bad Ragaz enjoys a good reputation among the world's health resorts and has made a name for itself in international tourism thanks to its grand hotels .
The history of the former farming village of Ragaz is closely linked to that of the Benedictine Abbey of Pfäfers . This owned the largest property and the most rights in the community. The prince- abbot's Palais Hof Ragaz was the governorship of the abbey . For centuries, Ragaz had a certain importance on an important north-south traffic axis between Germany and Italy. After the abbey was abolished in 1838, the canton of St. Gallen took over the monastery property and the thermal spring in the Tamina gorge.

In Bad Ragaz, Johanna Spyri wrote the Heidi story around 1880. Rainer Maria Rilke wrote the book Being here is glorious in Bad Ragaz .
tourism
Bad Ragaz - originally just called Ragaz - was a farming village. By finding the thermal spring in the nearby Tamina Gorge , Bad Ragaz became a world health resort.
The Old Bad Pfäfers, the oldest baroque bath building in Switzerland, is located in the Tamina Gorge . Where the spa doctor Paracelsus used to work, visitors can now study the history of the spa in Bad Ragaz and Pfäfers in the museum.
With the construction of the road to Bad Pfäfers (1838/39) and the draining of 36.5 ° C warm thermal water into the "Hof Ragaz", Ragaz became a spa resort. It was only after Bernhard Simon (1816-1900) of the World health resort, however Niederurnen ( GL made) in 1868 by the canton the domain Ragaz, ie the territory of Fürstabtei had Pfäfers purchased. Numerous hotels and guesthouses were built, and a number of different businesses were established in the up-and-coming health resort. In addition to the European and Russian nobility, personalities from politics, business, art and literature came to Ragaz.
In 1911 the public limited company of Bad- und Kuranstalten Ragaz-Pfäfers is founded.
In 1941, the Grandhotel Quellenhof was badly affected by a fire, which put a damper on tourism after the Second World War. It is thanks to ex- National Councilor Hans Albrecht that the Quellenhof was rebuilt.
The Pizolbahnen were completely modernized in 2007, and since then a new gondola lift has been running from Bad Ragaz to Alp Pardiel.
