The Pizol ( Romanesque for high peak ), formerly also Piz Sol , is 2844  m above sea level. M. alpine summit of the Glarus Alps . It is located 16 kilometers northwest of Chur in the Sarganserland in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen , between the Weisstannental , the Tamina and the Calfeisental . Other peaks in the mountain range are the Sazmartinshorn ( 2826  m ), the Zanaihorn ( 2820  m ), the Black Horns ( 2643  m ) and the Muntaluna ( 2421  m ). The Pizol is the highest mountain that lies entirely in the canton of St. Gallen.

To the east of the summit of the Pizol was the Pizol glacier . It was last measured in 2019 after it had almost completely melted and disintegrated.

The hiking and skiing area on the northeast side of the Pizol above the villages of Wangs and Bad Ragaz is also commonly referred to as Pizol .

The Pizol area was opened up in 1953/54 by a gondola lift each from Wangs and Bad Ragaz . The then oldest cable car in Switzerland from Bad Ragaz - a system based on the Bell / Wallmannsberger system - ceased operations in spring 2007 and was replaced by a new 8-seater gondola. The cable car leads to the middle station Pardiel at 1633  m . From there a 4-seater chairlift leads to Laufböden 2226  m .

After 20 years of operation, the Wangs line was replaced in 1975. The lift built at that time was replaced in the summer of 2009 by an 8-seater gondola lift from the Leitner company . It leads to the ford ( 1522  m ). From there you can take a 4-seater chair lift via Gaffia ( 1861  m ) to the Pizolhütte at 2224  m , a mountain restaurant with no overnight accommodation. From 1915 the Piz Sol hut of the SAC Piz Sol section stood at this point with 50 overnight stays.

The Pizol area is now marketed for tourism under the Heidiland brand, together with the neighboring Flumserberg area and other communities in the area .

Summer tourism

The Pizol is a popular hiking area in summer.

The 5-lake hike is considered a classic hiking tour in Switzerland . The hike begins at the Pizolhütte on Lake Wangs . The ascent to Wildseeluggen (Wildseelücke) at 2492  m above sea level. M. , from where you have a beautiful view of the Ortler and Piz Kesch , takes around an hour. Below the saddle is the Wildsee at 2,438  m . From there the view leads to the Pizol glacier, the Pizol summit and the Gray Horns. After a short descent you reach the greenish shimmering Schottensee at 2335  m . On the Schwarzplangg you reach the highest point of the hike at 2551  m . We continue via Schwarzsee 2368  m past numerous old Steinmannli to the fifth and last lake, the Baschalvasee at 2174  m . The hike takes around five hours.

There is also the Pardiel conveyor belt , which connects the mountain station of the Prodboden-Pardiel tow lift with the mountain station of the Bad Ragaz-Pardiel gondola lift .

The Pizol summit is a classic ski touring destination . The ski tour leads from the Pizolhütte over the Wildseeluggen to the Wildsee and from there south over the glacier to the east shoulder, where the ski depot is located. The ascent over the southeast ridge is partially insured. A total of 700 meters in altitude have to be overcome. The difficulty on the SAC ski touring scale is given as WS (not very difficult).

Routes

The summit can be reached from Gigerwaldsee in the south via Alp Tersol, the Pizolsattel and the western flank. From the north the ascent leads over the Wildseeluggen and the Pizolscharte to the summit. The route over the Pizol glacier, which used to be common in the past, has been replaced by a route further east that is secured with wire rope in some places due to the risk of falling rocks.
