The Calfeisental is located in the municipality of Pfäfers in the extreme south of the canton of St. Gallen . It is a side valley of the Tamina valley that branches off at Vättis and leads westwards to the Sardonahütte . In the Calfeisental - not to be confused with the Graubünden community of Calfreisen - there is the Gigerwaldsee reservoir , at the western end of which is the small hamlet of St. Martin .
At the beginning of the 14th century, Walsers settled the valley. It has not been inhabited all year round since 1652.
The surrounding mountains are called (clockwise starting in the south near Vättis): Ringelspitz / Piz Barghis, Tristelhorn, Piz Dolf / Trinserhorn, Surenstock / Piz Sardona , Schiben, Fanastock , Hangsackgrat , Sazmartinshorn and Vättnerchopf.
From the dam, the Calfeisen Valley is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Tectonic Arena Sardona .
The Tamina flows through the Calfeisental .
