St. Martin im Calfeisental is a hamlet and a former Walser settlement in the village of Vättis in the political municipality of Pfäfers in the southeastern corner of the canton of St. Gallen . He is located in the Sarganserland constituency .
geography
The hamlet of St. Martin is located west of the Gigerwaldsee in the Calfeisental at the foot of the Ringelspitz . The Tamina valley with the village of Vättis extends east of St. Martin . Between Gigerwald and Vättis - at the so-called Vättner window - the Aar massif is open.
The tree, which stands above St. Martin at an altitude of 1580 m and is signposted as the thickest spruce in the world, is no longer a record holder; a slightly thicker specimen was found in the Göscheneralp Valley.
history
At the beginning of the 14th century, the Walsers came from their former farms in Fidaz via the Trinser Fürggli to the Calfeisental. Settlement took place from top to bottom, from the mountain to the valley. The Walser received the Calfeisental with the Alp Sardona as a fief from the Pfäfers monastery . A scattered settlement of twelve families with around a hundred people emerged. The German field names in Calfeisental are reminiscent of the settlement: Rathausboden, Ammansboden, Ebni, Egg, Friedhöfli and Chilchli.
According to a dendrochronological investigation, the little church in St. Martin was built around 1312 as a parish church with eternal light. The Mesmerhaus opposite the church bears the year 1588. The figure of the Madonna and Child and the Christug Cross date from the time of the Walser immigration. The originals are in the museum in Vättis. The priest came from the valley for baptisms, weddings and funerals. In 1472 Martinsalp (Brändlisberg) was first mentioned as a church property.
In the 15th and 16th centuries the Walsers emigrated to Weisstannen , St. Margretenberg , the Bündner Herrschaft and Gams . It is possible that the Little Ice Age worsened the climate in the already harsh Calfeisen Valley, which was poor in the sun in winter. In 1652 the last Calfeisen-Walser - the wife of the late Mesmer, Ursula Sutter and her two sons - left the valley and moved to Vättis. Since then, the Calfeisental has only been managed as an alp and St. Martin has become a Maiensäss . The cross on the top of the church tower is the former grave cross of the last mesmer.
population
The Walserort Sankt Martin consists of seven buildings, including a restaurant with 180 seats inside, various double rooms and two dormitories. The management takes place from the end of May to the end of October. The rest of the time, Sankt Martin is closed to guests. From November the road from the dam wall to the village will no longer be cleared and will therefore remain closed due to the risk of avalanches.
Economy and tourism
The association “Pro Walser settlement St. Martin und Calfeisental” wants to maintain the Walser settlement of St. Martin im Calfeisental in its original form, as witnesses of the past, in addition to the cultural anchoring of Walserism. The association organizes a variety of cultural offers and services for the benefit of the Walser settlement and the valley (cinema, hay, guided tours, readings, renovation and operation of the Vorderen Hütte, etc.). The village belongs to a broad-based shareholder base. The association is involved with one share. A managing director appointed by the owners is responsible for running the catering.
Hiking trails on the Trinser Fürggli according Flims , on the Heidelberg and Heubützlipass into middle and upper Weisstannental , and from the latter via the further Foopass into Sernftal . At the upper end of the valley is the SAC's Sardonahütte . There is a post bus from Bad Ragaz to Vättis that runs several times a day and continues to the Gigerwald dam on summer weekends.
