history
The first traces of settlement could be found in Martinsacker. The prehistoric axes were probably stored there as a Bronze Age weapon depot and are believed to date from around 2000 BC. Come from BC.
In a deed of donation from the year 835 AD, the place name is mentioned for the first time as Campesias . With this document, Berengar and his wife Imma bequeathed their property to the St. Gallen monastery.
After the possessions of the Einsiedeln Abbey and the Disentis Abbey in the Gams were documented in the 10th century, the village then came into the possession of the Barons of Hohensax . The rule of Hohensax was then taken over by the Habsburgs at the end of the 14th century. Gams later came under the rule of the Zurich lords of Bonstetten .
During the Old Zurich War , a bloody battle broke out in Gams in 1446 when Appenzell and Toggenburg were repulsed by Austrian troops. In 1497 the Gamser finally bought themselves free and came under federal rule of the places Glarus and Schwyz. Gams was thus affiliated to the Bailiwick of Gaster.
