history

The nobleman Heinrich von Wildenberg, guardian of the Pfäfers monastery, was the owner of the fortress or Wart in der Au in 1261. By inheritance the rule came to the Werdenberg-Sargans house , the Count of Werdenberg and in 1414 to Count Friedrich VII of Toggenburg and in 1429 to Count Bernhard von Thierstein, who accepted the castle rights of Zurich and handed the Wartau fortress over to the city. With the sale of the County of Sargans to Zurich, Lucerne, Uri, Schwyz, Unterwalden, Glarus and Zug in 1483, the sovereignty over Wartau passed to these estates. In 1694/1695, in the so-called Wartau trade, war almost broke out between the Catholic and Reformed umbrella locations.

The county or from 1483 to 1798 the bailiwick of Sargans had high and low jurisdiction in the judicial community of Wartau. The lower jurisdiction within the Etters Gretschins, which belongs directly to the Wartau lordship, was excluded.
