history

Palfries was probably used by local novels as early as the 14th century and probably also inhabited. Later clearings were made in the 14th century by Walser in the lower and rear Palfries what many German place names indicate. The Walser in Gonzengebiet first time in 1398 in the Urbar of the county Sargans listed. In 1414 Palfries was first mentioned as a Walser settlement. They are also mentioned in a land register from 1531. The Walsers enjoyed the so-called "Walser freedoms", although probably only a few of them were ethnically Walser. As they were not cleared, they were neither serfs nor did their fiefdom revert to the landlord when they died.

The loss of the right to escape from snow and the May statutes from 1540 onwards brought the Walsers into great existential difficulties. The migration into the valley to Sargans or Wartau began around 1600 . As a witness of the Walser on Palfries, the so-called Palfries town hall , which is around 600 years old, has been preserved.

In 1803 all Walser citizens were granted St. Gallen citizenship , but the Wartau community initially successfully resisted the granting of community citizenship . It was not until 1827 that the last 30 poor and Catholic Walsers were granted Wartau citizenship through a court decision.
