Oberschan ( Schaa in the local dialect ) is a village in the political municipality of Wartau in the canton of St. Gallen .

Geographical location

Oberschan is the highest village in the political municipality of Wartau, which is the southernmost municipality in the Werdenberg region . Oberschan lies at the foot of the Alviers and the Gauschla . Malans is a little below Oberschan . If you drive through Oberschan, after a short time you reach the small villages of Gretschins and Fontnas and later the village of Weite .

Oberschan, including Gretschins and Malans, has 838 inhabitants (as of December 2017). Most of the population belongs to the Reformed denomination and is looked after by the Evangelical Reformed parish of Wartau. The Catholic part of the population belongs to the Wartau parish, which belongs to the Werdenberg pastoral care unit.

education

Primary school students from the villages of Oberschan, Malans, Gretschins and Fontnas are taught in the Bühl school (1st to 6th grade) in Oberschan. The gym and kindergarten are located in the multi-purpose building in Oberschan (MZO). The upper school students are taught in the upper school center Seidenbaum, which is located in the Rhine valley east of Azmoos and northeast of Trübbach .

regional customs

Every year on New Year's Eve in Oberschan, the “Silveschterchläus” go from house to house, pat those who are visited on the back and wish them a happy new year. Young men (including young women, so-called Chlausmeitli ) are mostly used as New Year's Eve lice . House owners often offer the Kläusen a glass of mulled wine .
