The Sernftal or Kleintal is a mountain valley in the Swiss canton of Glarus . It is named after the Sernf , an 18 km long right-hand tributary of the Linth , which flows into it at Schwanden . The Sernftal belongs to the unified community Glarus Süd . There are the villages of Elm , Matt and Engi .

geology

At the entrance to the Sernftal lies the Glarus Thrust , one of the most striking geological sites in the Alps: in the Lochsite , older rock layers are superimposed on younger ones , which led to the discovery of the thrust of mountain tops . In the American Museum of Natural History in New York a faithful copy is shown. In July 2008, the Glarus thrust was on the list of UNESCO - World Heritage added.

Surname

The Sernftal was first mentioned in a court document in 1240 as Serniftal . It appeared under the same name in the Säckinger land register in the middle of the 14th century . Later names were Sernef , Sernft and Sernfft . The name comes either from the Indo-European ser for stream or ser for red, which would refer to the red stones in the water (Sernifit or Verrucano ).

A main road runs through the entire Sernftal valley. Between 1905 and 1969 the Sernftalbahn operated between Schwanden and Elm . Today the Sernftal car company is responsible for public transport.

Oddities

The Sernf has it in Internet discussion groups (e.g. on Usenet ), which are dedicated to the German language, as well as through the column onion fish as the "fifth German word" with the ending -nf (next to five , Geneva , hemp , mustard ) brought to a certain level of awareness and found its way into various FAQs . Since the 21st edition, the name of the Swiss river has also been listed in the Duden .

High voltage line
