As part of the municipality reform in Glarus, it became the new municipality of Glarus on January 1, 2011 with the municipalities of Betschwanden , Braunwald , Elm , Engi , Haslen , Linthal , Luchsingen , Mitlödi , Rüti (GL) , Schwanden (GL) , Schwändi , and Sool South merged.

coat of arms

The age-old custom of Schybenfleuge , which is particularly popular with village youth , is practiced during the carnival season. Glowing wooden discs are thrown into the nightly darkness. The custom has found its way into the municipal coat of arms. The coat of arms was adopted on June 12, 1941.

geography

The village is located in the Sernftal on the Sernf , the right tributary of the Linth . It is the middle of the three villages in the valley. The Chrauchbach flowing in from the east deposited a cone of rubble at the exit of the Chrauchtal, on which the first settlement arose. The settlement area also includes the hamlets of Trämligen , Auen , Brumbach Stalden and the south-facing, year-round sun terrace Weissenberge . The municipality consists of steep, wooded mountain slopes, high-altitude Alps and, among other things, Spitzmeilen (2501 m above sea level) and Foostock (2610 m above sea level, highest point) of several high mountain peaks. 39.6% of the community area is agricultural land, 32% is forest, 1% is settlement area and 27% is unproductive. The climate is alpine.

population

The population fell from 560 in 1960 to 366 in 165 households in 2003.

politics

The SP has 59% of the vote, 40% of the votes go to other parties.

economy

Agriculture and alpine farming as well as slate mining in the neighboring Landesplattenberg in Engi were the most important sources of income for the residents of Matt until the 20th century. From 1867 to 1967 there was also a textile factory (spinning mill) in operation. Some business, including the oldest construction company in the canton of Glarus, Marti AG (founded in 1860), has established itself. About 26% of those in employment work in agriculture, 57% in industry and trade, and 17% in the service sector.

traffic

Since the shutdown of the Sernftalbahn in 1969, the main road for individual traffic and bus operations of the Autobetriebe Sernftal AG has been Matt's only traffic development.

tourism

The construction of the Matt-Weissenberge (LMW) aerial cableway in 1967 led to a tourist development in Matt and the higher-lying parts of the community. The sunny terrace at an altitude of 1300 m is a destination and a holiday destination. A hiking trail leads from the Chrauchtal over the Riseten Pass ( 2189  m above sea level ) into the Weisstannental .

The first written mention of Matt, at that time an estate called Mattun , is documented in 1273. The place name (documented as Matt since 1497 ) is derived from its original meaning Wiese (Swiss German Matte / Matt ).

The first chapel was built between 1261 and 1273. In 1273 the chapel was elevated to a valley church and it is a landmark of the place. Until the ransom of the Glarus family in 1395, the Matter had to pay taxes to the Säckingen monastery .

The current church probably dates from 1497 and is the oldest surviving church in the Glarus region. Inside there is an important late Gothic wooden ceiling. From 1527 to 1530, the Glarus pastor Fridolin Brunner carried out the Reformation . In 1528 the icons were removed from the church, in the same year Matt and Engi became a common parish .

The management of Egg, Riseten and the Krauchal, which is the largest alp in the canton, is mentioned in a document as early as 1350. Since 1767 water power has been used for sawmills, tamping and mills. Jakob Spälty's cotton mill was added later. The company, founded in 1868, was closed in 1967.

In 1799 General Suvorov and his army passed through Matt on their way over the Panixer Pass .

Bad harvests and overpopulation forced many residents to emigrate in the middle of the 19th century. In 1855, a total of 240 people left the Matt-Engi parish on a single day.

Others

The Chrauchtal floodplain is of national importance due to its richness in flora and fauna as well as its scenic beauty.
