Riedern is a former political municipality in the canton of Glarus in Switzerland .
The village was merged with the municipalities of Ennenda , Glarus and Netstal to form the new municipality of Glarus on January 1, 2011 as part of the Glarus municipal reform .
geography
Riedern was the smallest municipality in the canton in terms of area. The district is at the foot of the Klöntal, where the Klöntalersee is located.
history
Riedern split politically in 1630 from the neighboring municipality of Glarus . The Evangelical Reformed and Roman Catholic parishes as well as the school community still form Riedern together with Glarus.
On October 2, 1799, the Russian Field Marshal Suvorov and his army stopped here for two days during the Second Coalition War before retreating over the Panixer Pass.
Personalities
- Valeria Spälty (* 1983): The silver medalist at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin has lived in Riedern since she was born in 1983. There she attended primary school before she went to secondary school and then to grammar school in Glarus. After the Olympic Games, a street in the center of the village was renamed in her honor and is now called Valeria-Spälty-Strasse .
