history

Around 1350 Hätzingen was first mentioned with Hezzinge (n) . Until 1395, the area was subject to tax at the Säckingen monastery , lived on sheep breeding and belonged to the Tagwen Nesselowe. From the late Middle Ages until 1989, Hätzingen formed an election day with Diesbach and Betschwanden .

In terms of church, the village was first oriented towards Glarus and from the 14th century towards Betschwanden. In 1496 a timber cooperative with neighboring towns was first recorded, and cattle breeding also increased. In 1528 the Reformation was accepted by a majority.

In 1538 the large house was built, which served as a warehouse for salt and grain. In 1735 and 1882 the forest was divided. The main source of income was now hand spinning. The Hefti cloth factory was founded in 1831 and was the largest employer until it closed in 1991.

From 1797 there was a school of its own in Hätzingen, and the first schoolhouse was built in 1841. In 1923, today's schoolhouse was built, which also housed the secondary school founded in 1861 and merged with Linthal in 1973 . Since 1974 the building has been the primary school again, which is shared with the neighboring town of Luchsingen. There has also been a Tibetan colony since 1973.

In 1850 500 people lived in Hätzingen; In 1900 and 1950 there were 653 residents each. After that, the population decreased, so that in 2000 there were still 341 people, almost a third of whom were foreigners. In 2000, 80 percent of those in employment worked in the service sector.

Hätzingen was an independent political municipality in the canton of Glarus in Switzerland until December 31, 2003 . On January 1, 2004, it was combined with the communities of Diesbach GL and Luchsingen to form the new community of Luchsingen. Since January 1, 2011, it has been part of the Glarus Süd community together with 11 other communities .

Origin of name

The name Hätzingen is of Alemannic origin. This suggests a settlement around 800 to 1000 AD. As with all place names on -ingen, -ikon, -igen etc., Hätzingen is originally a farm. The prefix «Hätz-» leads back to the Alemanni Hazzo, who gave the settlement its name as the head of the clan.
