Schwanden (GL) is a former political municipality in the Swiss canton of Glarus .

As part of the municipality reform in Glarus, it was merged on January 1, 2011 with the municipalities of Betschwanden , Braunwald , Elm , Engi , Haslen , Linthal , Luchsingen , Matt , Mitlödi , Rüti (GL) , Schwändi and Sool to form the new municipality of Glarus Süd .

geography

Schwanden is the largest village in the Glarus hinterland, is located at the confluence of the Linth and Sernf rivers and is exactly on the 47th parallel (see above right).

The industrial site is mostly fog-free even in winter.

The hamlet of Thon is west of the village.

history

At the time of the denominational division of the canton of Glarus into a federal state of Glarus Reformed religion and a federal state Glarus Catholic religion, Schwanden was the main town and location of the regional parish of the Reformed state for most of the time . The powder tower as a separate storage location for weapons and ammunition of the Reformed class has been preserved and testifies to the mistrust of the federal class of Glarus Catholic religion.

Economy and tourism

Schwanden is the home of the electrical appliance manufacturer Therma (and as such was the production site of Electrolux Schweiz AG from 1978 to 2015 ), as well as the Adler brewery, the last remaining beer brewery in the canton of Glarus. Other companies are, among others, the Kunststoff Schwanden AG, the Schätti AG, the Inauen-Schätti AG, the SKS Rehab AG, the Blesi AG and the GRB Glarner Regionalbank .

Schwanden has optimized its infrastructure for tourism in recent years . It acts as a starting point for hikes and bike tours in summer and ski tours in winter.

Above the village, at 1111 m above sea level. M. on the Schwanderberg, lies the scouts home Villa Kunterbunt . The house was built in 1903 as a holiday home for the Winterthur section of the Swiss Alpine Club and offers space for fifty people.
