The locksmith Franz Xaver Weltert first produced mobile ovens in 1871 in Büron and from 1872 in Sursee . The company grew, a foundry was added in 1890 and ceramic processing in 1892 . Due to financial difficulties, the company was restructured into the Sursee AG furnace factory in 1898. In 1909 he had over 350 employees. The product range grew, various ovens and stoves were produced. From 1923 electric stoves were added. The name was changed to Sursee Werke AG. In 1966, Sursee Werke AG and Elcalor AG in Aarau and parts of Therma AG merged under the umbrella of Therma Grossküchen AG. This has been part of the Electrolux Group since 1978. In 2002 Therma Grossküche AG was merged into Electrolux Professional AG.

In 2011 Electrolux Professional set up a new center for development and production in Sursee, where around 200 employees from the previous locations in Sursee and Aarau were concentrated. In this context, the Aarau-based heating elements division was sold to the Swedish NIBE Industrier in 2011 as Backer ELC .

The former administration building of the Sursee furnace factory was listed as a historical monument in 2002 .

Therma and Electrolux Schwanden

At the turn of the century, Samuel Blumer investigated how electrical energy can be converted into thermal energy. In 1904 he founded a small factory in Schwanden, which was restructured into Therma AG in 1907 with the help of investors . Produced iron , boiler and especially electric hobs , 1927 stoves for commercial kitchens , refrigerators, and from 1932 from 1955 kitchen combinations. Therma had a monopoly in Switzerland and the products also sold well abroad. The production facilities were enlarged several times; towards the end of the Second World War, over 1,000 employees were working in Schwanden. After difficult economic times, Electrolux bought Therma in 1978 and gave up the manufacture of refrigerators and kitchens. In 1997 the sales organization was separated from the Schwanden plant as Therma Household AG. In 2005 it was integrated into the parent company as Electrolux Schwanden AG.

In 2008, 300 employees were still working at the Schwanden site. This was followed by job cuts, due to products that were too expensive and no longer competitive. In 2013, 80 of the then 230 jobs were cut. Electrolux closed the factory in Schwanden at the end of 2015, sold the area and cut the remaining 120 jobs.

Electrolux AG

Electrolux in Stockholm founded the subsidiary Electrolux AG in Zurich in 1922. Vacuum cleaners and floor polishing machines were sold first , followed by refrigerators, kitchen machines and dishwashers. In 1978 Electrolux took over the Therma group. These included Therma AG in Schwanden, Therma Grossküchen AG in Sursee, Elcalor AG in Aarau and Volta GmbH in Bregenz . The production of cooking appliances, extractor hoods and dishwashers were centralized in Schwanden. In 1980, 15 interim storage facilities were transferred to a new central warehouse in Mägenwil . 1985 the Zanker household appliances AG was taken over. In 1994 AEG Hausgeräte AG was taken over, which in 1998 was merged with Therma Household AG to form A + T Hausgeräte AG. A + T Hausgeräte was merged with Electrolux AG in 2005; the Therma brand is no longer used.
