The Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology (MeteoSwiss) ( French Office fédéral de météorologie et de climatologie (MétéoSuisse) , Italian Ufficio federale di meteorologia e climatologia (MeteoSvizzera) , Romansh Uffizi federal per meteorologia e climatologia (MeteoSvizra) ) is a federal agency of the Swiss Confederation . MeteoSwiss is Switzerland's national weather service .

MeteoSwiss employs around 380 people at five locations. These are located at Zurich Airport (headquarters), in Arosa , Geneva , Locarno and Payerne . Two Cray XE6 supercomputers from the Swiss National Supercomputing Center in Lugano are used for weather forecasting .

In 1880 the Federal Council decided to found the Central Meteorological Institute (MZA), after 88 weather stations had already existed with federal support in 1863. This changed its name in 1979 to the Swiss Meteorological Institute (SMA). Since 1996 the company has been called MeteoSwiss . Since 2006 the official title has been the Federal Office for Meteorology and Climatology MeteoSwiss .

MeteoSwiss monitors the weather around the clock, creates weather forecasts and warns the emergency services and the population if there is a threat of storm winds, heavy precipitation, thunderstorms or heat waves. It provides specialized weather forecasts to the economy on demand and meets the needs of professionals and athletes who exercise outdoors. It also provides comprehensive weather services for civil, military and private aviation.

MeteoSwiss scientists are involved in research and development projects for a better understanding of the weather and climate in the Alpine region and foster the exchange of knowledge across national borders. MeteoSwiss participates in important international bodies, including as the official representative of Switzerland in the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in Geneva.
