The RegioExpress (abbreviated RE ) is an accelerated train of regional traffic in Switzerland , it corresponds roughly to the Regional-Express in Germany and Austria .

In contrast to Regios , it does not stop at all stations. The frequency of stops is often significantly higher than with an InterRegio : the RegioExpress trains between Olten and Lucerne stop eight times, while the InterCity trains do not stop at all and the InterRegio trains only stop twice. The train runs are usually shorter than with an InterRegio and, unlike InterRegios, the wagons are not always air-conditioned. The RegioExpress trains belong to regional traffic , while InterRegio trains belong to long-distance traffic.

history

Until the timetable change in 2004, this type of train, then still abbreviated as RX , was only to be found on certain routes such as Constance - Zurich or the Rheintal Express ( St. Gallen - Chur ). On various routes there was still a type of train that was called express train , train direct or treno diretto , depending on the part of the country . These trains have been renamed RegioExpress and InterRegio depending on whether they belong to regional or long-distance traffic , as these names are language-neutral and can be used consistently throughout Switzerland.

Originally, the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) planned to split the previous express trains into RX (within a region) and IR (between regions) regardless of stopping frequency and rolling stock (e.g. St. Gallen – Chur 1997–1999, alternating between RX and St. Gallen – Chur IR Basel – St. Gallen – Chur with the same rolling stock and the same stopping frequency).

Today, RegioExpress trains are generally ordered by the federal government and the cantons , accelerated trains that are operated by various companies, in addition to SBB, in particular by BLS , e.g. B. Bern – Lucerne or the Lötschberger via the Lötschberg mountain line and the Rhaetian Railway (RhB).

Rolling stock

The SBB use various trains for RegioExpress services. Mainly regional traffic compositions like Flirt , Dosto , DPZ and NPZ Domino are used. There are also long-distance shuttle trains , mostly with standard wagons and hauled by Re 420 or Re 460 . On the Bern - Biel route , which was classified as RE from 2010 to 2019, IC2000 double-decker compositions were also used at times .

In contrast to IR trains, RegioExpress does not require air-conditioned rolling stock, regardless of which modern, air-conditioned wagons are used.
