The Re 450 is a four-axle converter locomotive of the SBB for the S-Bahn Zurich . The locomotives are the first generation of double-deck - commuter trains were constructed.

Due to the shuttle train operation, a second driver's cab was dispensed with and the space gained was used for a luggage compartment. Outwardly similar to the rest of the double-decker shuttle train (DPZ) and with the second driver's cab removed, nothing reminds you that technically the Re 450 largely corresponds to the Re 456 built by SLM / BBC for private railways from 1987 onwards . However, the chassis is a new development from SIG . The Re 450 is the first large series of converter locomotives with GTO thyristors and three-phase asynchronous motors that are used by the SBB.

Between 1989 and 1997 a total of 115 Re 450s were built by SLM / ABB . The first series of 24 locomotives was ordered under the designation Re 4/4 V (10500 - 10523), but was already under the new designation Re 4/4 450 (450 000 - 450 023) under which the second series of 26 machines (450 024 - 450 049) were delivered. In the meantime, the SBB changed the series and company numbers again, and the locomotives received their series designation Re 450, which is still valid today . Due to the high capacity utilization of the SLM due to the construction of the SBB Re 460 , which started on a large scale in 1992, the 45 locomotive bodies of the third series (450 050 - 450 094) will be supplied by Schindler Waggon (SWP / SWG) from the Pratteln plant. The fourth and last series of another 20 machines (450 095 - 450 114) will be delivered from 1996 - after delivery of the Re 460 has been completed . These machines will again be built with SLM locomotive bodies, while ABB Verkehrstechnik, now under the name Adtranz , is again supplying the electrical equipment.

The corresponding double-decker cars (DS) are built by Schindler Waggon ( car body , mechanical parts), SIG (chassis) and ABB or Adtranz (electrical equipment) during the same period . A Re 450 shuttle train composition generally consists of an AB and a B car and a control car (Bt).

The Re 450 and the associated DS-Bt have automatic clutches and, in normal operation, are each coupled by composition via the automatic clutch. The multiple control allows the joint management of up to four shuttle train compositions. Since the usable length of the platforms on the Zurich S-Bahn network is usually limited to a maximum of 320 m, the display and diagnosis level of the driver's cabs was designed to be just three units.

Modernization program 2011–2018

Re 450 071 - conversion prototype

As part of the “Lion” modernization program, the Re 450 at the Yverdon industrial plant are being completely renovated. The following work is carried out

  • Rust restoration and repainting
  • Replacement of the traction motor rotors and rewinding of the stators
  • Replacement of gear boxes
  • Replacement of the front lighting with LED lighting
  • Upgrading the traction converter
  • Replacement of the speed measurement system with integrated safety systems and driving data registration
  • Retrofitting a compressed air system with air dryer and automatic water / oil separator

The Re 450 071 was the first locomotive to undergo a refit. She was a good year in revision at the Yverdon industrial plant which she left in July 2011. The revision of all Re 450s was completed in mid-2017.

Maintenance work Yverdon

The Re 450, which is fully operational on its own, is basically able to drive any UIC -compliant wagon, but this is not done in practice for operational reasons. When transferring trips to Yverdon to the main workshops (new industrial plant ), other cars / vehicles can be carried. If the Re 450 is not remotely controlled - or simply towed - from a control car or other vehicle, it is necessary to rotate it in the maintenance systems.

Of the 115 delivered locomotives, all machines are still in daily use today. Two pieces (450 067 and 070) were transferred to SZU in 2008 as Re 456 551 and 552 .

A further replica was dispensed with after the previous production facilities were no longer available. From 2006 the existing 115 DPZs were supplemented with the double-decker multiple units (DTZ) SBB RABe 514 . Originally it was planned to let the DPZ and the DTZ run in multiple control, so that the DTZ were also equipped with the GF-Sécheron coupling. The idea was to let the DTZ run in the basic cycle and then to reinforce these compositions with DPZ during rush hour. Due to technical difficulties, however, this idea turned out to be ineligible, so that the vehicles now run according to lines.

Due to the circulation, the DPZ was also used on the RegioExpress line Zurich HB – Aarau until December 2018 , the RE in Aarau was linked to the S3 to and from Wetzikon. In addition, the DPZ are also used as replacement trains in the event of line closures or for other uses of the IC2000 as InterRegio (Konstanz–) Zurich – Lucerne.

Low-floor double-deck car (NDW)

Entry of a composition in a new design into Seebach station

At the end of June 2008, the SBB announced that they had ordered 121 new low-floor double-decker cars (NDW) from the Siemens / Bombardier consortium . The new cars are wheelchair accessible, air-conditioned and have been in operation since 2011. In a refit program, the existing wagons are subsequently u. a. built-in air conditioning (DPZ +). The investment volume is CHF 360 million - including SBB's own work, excluding the refit of the old vehicles. The first-generation double-decker cars (DPZ) freed up by the use of the new low-floor double-decker cars will be combined to form additional double-decker trains ( HVZ ) for use during rush hour.
