Location of the municipality | |
Mönchaltorf , formerly Mönch-Altorff , is a municipality in the district of Uster in the canton of Zurich in Switzerland .
geography
The place is nestled between the district capital Uster and the neighboring towns of Gossau , Esslingen , Egg and the Greifensee at the foot of the Pfannenstiel in a former swamp area . Two streams flow through the village and join in the center of the village. The hamlet of Heusberg belongs to Mönchaltorf and was part of the parish of Uster until 1770. Heusberg is one of two exclaves in the canton of Zurich (the other exclave concerns the municipality of Glattfelden in the Bülach district with the Neuhaus exclave, a single farm in the Rheinaue).
history
The place is documented for the first time in 741 as the Alemannic mansion settlement "Villa Altorf". When it was taken over by the St. Gallen Monastery in 744 , it was given the name "Altorf monarchorum" (Mönch-Altorf).
In the hamlet of Burg , the former Liebenberg Castle was on fire . In the early 13th century it was the seat of the Liebenberg ministers . From 1293 to 1391 it was the St. Gallen fiefdom of Giel von Glattburg (von Liebenberg) and then was bought by the Habsburg-Austrian servants Gessler, who pledged it to the city of Zurich in 1408, where it was destroyed in the Old Zurich War in 1440 stayed. A second castle under the name Liebenberg was located east of Kollbrunn above the Tösstal .
In 1909, the Uster-Mönchaltorf-Oetwil electric tram went into operation, which ceased operations in 1949.

Attractions
The church, mentioned for the first time in 902, got its present form through structural changes in the 14th and 15th centuries. In 1522, master Ulrich Schmid created the splendidly carved wooden ceiling, which is now a listed building. The Mönchaltorfer Untervogt and Captain Felix Keller (1664–1724) had the so-called Hauptmannshof built in 1709. It has belonged to the Zurich Homeland Security Foundation since 1982 .
The Silberweide nature station is located in upper Greifensee, in the middle of the Greifensee nature reserve. The nature station, in operation since August 2005, offers numerous activities in the field of environmental education.
Culture
Various cultural events take place in the church. A meeting point is the “Mönchhof”, which opened in 1990, a village center with common rooms and shops. The Chilbi market takes place every year in autumn.
