When there were still no roads in the Tösstal, traffic was carried over the river bed whenever possible. The water power was used to operate spinning mills . From 1800 several water channels were built to the emerging factories. The construction of the Tösstalstrasse was completed in 1837. Homework such as basket weaving , weaving and embroidery was common. With the establishment of the factories, this work lost its attractiveness and many Tösstalers became factory workers. The first unions were founded and today's rights had to be fought for.

With the Tösstalbahn, a private company built a railway line from Winterthur to the Tösstal, which began operating in 1875. It has been part of the SBB since 1912 . In the 20th century some companies closed as work relocated to Asia; many factory workers lost their jobs. Company areas were converted, new SMEs moved in or lofts were built.

While animal husbandry and agriculture provided people with an income in Kollbrunn until the middle of the last century, this area is no longer of great importance in the 21st century.

Religion - denomination
  • The Evangelical Reformed Church is located on Kirchstrasse . It was built in 1950.
  • The Roman Catholic Church is located on Bahnhofstrasse and is called like the parish of St. Antonius . Built in 1898 for the immigrant Catholic working-class families, it is now a rare architectural testimony to a type of building widespread in the canton of Zurich for Catholic churches at the end of the 19th century: a single-nave church with a rectory attached to the church choir. Today, this type of building can only be found a second time in the canton of Zurich, namely at the church of St. Pirminius in Pfungen.
  • The chapel of the Free Missionary Congregation Kollbrunn is located at Untere Bahnhofstrasse 15 .
