Urban district Lakes (District 3)

Sennhof is an outside watch and at the same time a district of the city of Winterthur and belongs to district 3 ( lakes ).

Geographically, the place forms the entrance to the Tösstal from Winterthur and is separated from the rest of the city by the Seemer Buck, over which a car road and the Tösstalbahn lead into the city. The Bühler spinning mills , which also belong to the village, are located on the other side of the Töss and therefore in the area of the Illnau-Effretikon community .

history

For a long time there was only one cattle and dairy farm in Sennhof, which is where the name of the current district comes from. A settlement in Sennhof was mentioned for the first time, at that time still under the name Nüprechton ( Neubrechte ), on July 9, 1241, when Count Hartmann gave up goods there that his uncle had given as a dowry in a marriage. At that time, however, it was mentioned in the document that the place produced “income in the dairy industry”. In 1847 the poor house of the Seen community was built in Sennhof, in which the families living there had to live independently. In 1850, 50 farmers and poor house inmates lived in Sennhof. The poor house kept its function until 1883.

Much more important for the development of Sennhof was the construction of the new factory of the Bühler spinning mills in 1858 on the other side of the Töss , which quickly developed a factory village belonging to the factory in Sennhof. In 1875, Sennhof was constituted as perhaps the last newly founded civil parish in the canton of Zurich. On October 1, 1876, the place received its own post office. The first school house was built in 1899 on land donated by the factory owners. By 1900 Sennhof already had 300 inhabitants, almost all of whom were connected to the Bühler spinning mills. In 1921 Sennhof was incorporated into the city of Winterthur together with the Political Community of Lakes and the civil parish that had existed up to that point was dissolved.

Sennhof, which was developing into the agglomeration suburb of Winterthur, was extremely multicultural in the 1980s due to a high proportion of guest workers and had a proportion of foreigners of over 50%. In recent times the population of the outside watch has increased by leaps and bounds due to new buildings, from 1990 to 2000 alone the number of residents almost doubled from 496 to 966. The Sennhof post office was closed on February 28, 2003. The Bühler spinning mills still employ 150 people today.
