The Church of St. Antonius is the Roman Catholic parish church of the municipality of Zell in the Zurich district of Winterthur . The church is located in the Kollbrunn district . The associated parish of Zell is responsible for the towns of Zell, Weisslingen , Kyburg and Schlatt . The church of St. Antonius is an architectural testimony to a type of building for Roman Catholic churches that was widespread in the canton of Zurich at the end of the 19th century: a single-nave church with a rectory attached to the choir. Today, this type of building can only be found a second time in the canton of Zurich, namely at the church of St. Pirminius in Pfungen.

history

prehistory

In the Middle Ages , Kollbrunn was a church in Zell, which was called "Cella an der Toissa" and was an early medieval church from the 6th to 8th centuries. Century owned. In the course of the Reformation in 1524, Catholic worship was banned in what is now the Canton of Zurich and the churches were used for Reformed worship. It was not until the Edict of Tolerance of 1807 that a Catholic church service was permitted again for the first time in the canton of Zurich, but only in the city of Zurich. In 1813, 50 Catholics living in the city of Winterthur appealed to the city fathers to be tolerant . However, it was not until 1862, when the Rheinau monastery was abolished and the further use of its property was legally regulated by the canton of Zurich, that the first Catholic service since the Reformation was allowed to take place in Winterthur. The so-called First Zurich Church Law from 1863 recognized Zurich as well as the Catholic parishes in Winterthur, Rheinau and Dietikon (the last two were traditionally Catholic places), so that a Catholic parish could be established in Winterthur. In 1868 the newly built St. Peter and Paul Church was opened in the presence of representatives of the cantonal government, including state clerk and poet Gottfried Keller, and the city council of Winterthur. However, the establishment of further parishes in the canton was not recognized by the state, which is why these had to be set up on the basis of private and association law, including the parish of St. Antonius Kollbrunn.

Development and construction history

During the industrialization of the 19th century, Catholic families came to the Tösstal for the first time since the Reformation . The Catholics of Kollbrunn and the surrounding area had to travel a long way to attend a Catholic service, so there was the opportunity to take part in the church of St. Peter and Paul Winterthur, built in 1868, or in the services that take place in various bars around Bauma in the upper Tösstal, which meant running times of one or three hours. The newly founded Kollbrunn Catholic Association therefore campaigned for Catholic services to take place in Kollbrunn. In 1896 a church service was opened in the upper hall of the Zum Felsen restaurant and from 1888 religious instruction was given to the children in Kollbrunn from the parish of St. Peter and Paul Winterthur. In 1897 the construction of the Church of St. Anthony began, which was built with the help of the domestic mission . In May 1898 the first service took place in the shell of the church. In the following years the equipment of the church was added. In the summer of 1898, the St. Antonius Church received the Stations of the Cross , which were created by Benziger, Einsiedeln . In the following year the pews were installed and in 1900 the church received the high altar , which was created by Müller from Wil. In 1910 St. Antonius was raised to an independent parish and separated from St. Peter and Paul Winterthur. When the Sunday trains were stopped in 1918 during the First World War , the pastor of Kollbrunn began to hold church services in Turbenthal in the Hutzikon schoolhouse . In 1934 a separate church was consecrated in Turbenthal. The resulting parish Herz Jesu Turbenthal is thus a daughter parish of St. Antonius Kollbrunn. In 1964 the outside of the church was renovated and the inside was renovated in 1968–1970 and adapted to the requirements of the liturgical constitution of the Second Vatican Council . The six stained glass windows by Heinrich Stäubli, Engelburg, were also created here . The natural stone mosaic by the artist Johann J. Zemp was installed in the choir of the church in 1987. In 2006 the outside of the church and the rectory were painted, the rectory was renovated and a bright pavilion with a secretariat and meeting room was built. In 2009 the church was renewed and the interior was renovated.

The parish of St. Antonius of Padua with its 1,973 members (as of 2017) is one of the smaller Catholic parishes in the canton of Zurich.

Interior and artistic equipment

The Church of St. Anthony kept its original shape until 1968. As part of an interior renovation, the high altar and other furnishings were removed and replaced by a people's altar . In this way the church was adapted to the liturgy constitution of the Second Vatican Council . The columns for the holy water font , the altar, the ambo , the font and the table for the tabernacle were made of bronze from concrete , a material that was modern in those years . The modern glass windows come from Heinrich Stäubli, Engelburg. They show the creation of the world according to the book Genesis chap. 1, 1-31. Since Kollbrunn was considered an outspoken workers' village, the artist Heinrich Stäubli tried to ennoble work by depicting the creation of the world by God. Each window shows a day in the story of creation: God separated light from darkness , the vault was created and God separated water and earth , God let young green grow , God separated the lights in the sky, the sun for the day, the moon for them Night , God created the animals in all four elements and God created man in his image . Heinrich Stäubli symbolized the likeness of God and man in the sixth window with the cross. In 1987, the interior was supplemented by a wall mosaic by Johann J. Zemp, which was placed behind the altar on the front wall of the church. In 2009 the interior of the church was renovated.

organ

In 1900 the church received its first organ , which was bought second-hand. A second instrument was in service until 1987, when it was replaced by the current organ. Today's organ was built by the Späth Orgelbau company from Rapperswil. The expertise for the instrument comes from Ambros Koch, Fischingen Monastery . The playing action and stop action are purely mechanical, the instrument has slider drawers and interchangeable steps for bassoon 16 ', shelf 8' and cymbal.
