Engelburg is a Swiss town in the canton of St. Gallen , at the foot of the Tannenberg. Together with Abtwil and St. Josefen , Engelburg forms the political municipality of Gaiserwald .
In the Middle Ages , the area consisted of isolated hamlets and farms. The church, built between 1768 and 1770, was consecrated to the holy guardian angels . This is how Engelburg got its name. Around the same time, Engelburg broke away from St. Josefen and in 1807 formed its own parish.
Until the first half of the 19th century, fruit growing and animal husbandry were the main source of income. After that, the embroidery industry was predominant until after the First World War . Today Engelburg is very popular as a local recreation area and place to live. While Engelburg had around 400 inhabitants a good hundred years ago, it had around 1,200 in 1970 and 2,940 in 2007.
