Abtwil is a Swiss town in the canton of St. Gallen . It belongs to the political community of Gaiserwald , which also includes Engelburg (2890 inhabitants) and Sankt Josefen (167 inhabitants). The place is served by public transport by lines 3, 4 and 12 and the night bus N2 of the VBSG , the line 158 of the Regiobus AG and the post bus line 132.
history
Appiwilla is said to have been mentioned for the first time at the beginning of the 13th century. However, it is only documented in a document copy from the 18th century, which refers to a lost original from the year 1200. Authentic documents are available for 1303 ( Abwille ), 1308 ( Apwille ) and 1357 ( Appwille ).
The originally rural village developed in the course of the 19th century through craft and industry (canvas and cotton manufacture, embroidery). The population has increased significantly in recent decades due to the influx of people.
Abtwil currently has approx. 4,850 inhabitants. It consists of the old village center and the single-family housing estate on Sonnenberg as well as an industrial area. In addition to two primary schools and an upper school center , there is also a fire station and a police station. Abtwil is a popular shopping location with an indoor adventure pool and cinema as well as numerous sports facilities.
Attractions
- The parish church of St. Joseph is one of the outstanding examples of historicism in Eastern Switzerland. It was built in the neo-Gothic style from 1903 to 1905 according to plans by August Hardegger , who was one of the busiest Swiss architects around 1900 , and consecrated on October 30, 1905 by the St. Gallen bishop Augustinus Egger .
- The neo-Gothic furnishings (altars with paintings and statues, pulpit, stations of the cross) were designed by the architect Joseph Elsner and supplied from his workshop for church art in Munich .
- The decorative painting in the choir and nave was created by painter Carl Glauner from Wil .
- The colored glazing was supplied by Georg Röttinger's studio in Zurich .
- The rectory next to the church was also built according to plans by August Hardegger from 1903 to 1905 in the neo-renaissance style.

- The Appowila Highland Games have taken place every second year since 2009.
- Many sports activities are possible in Abtwil, for example in the Säntispark or on the sports fields in Spiserwis. Säntispark had 928,000 visitors in 2013 and is owned by the Migros Ostschweiz cooperative .
