The Re 460 is a four-axle multi-purpose locomotive of the SBB . It belongs to the Lok 2000 family.
history
Political background
In the 1970s , the SBB evaluated suitable forms of high-speed transport for Switzerland . The Bahn 2000 project slowly took shape and various cost-benefit analyzes led to the realization that the infrastructure and rolling stock should be designed for a maximum speed of 200 km / h. Despite the availability of (but not yet tested) newer technology, SBB ordered the fifth and sixth series (45 + 27 pieces) of the proven Re 4/4 II , which were delivered between 1981 and 1985. The rolling stock industry, represented by SLM and BBC , built the four prototype locomotives Re 4/4 IV at the same time , which were handed over to the SBB in 1982.
Due to the decline in traffic, the series Re 4/4 IV was not ordered , especially since the thyristor technology had been out of date since the development of three-phase drive technology. For the SBB, the Zurich S-Bahn came to the fore. A feasibility study by the SLM on a heavy high-speed locomotive, as requested by the SBB, showed that this was feasible, but important development steps were still missing. In 1985, SBB placed a development contract with the SLM / BBC consortium for the first time. A specification sheet was worked out jointly by 1987, which also represented the offer from the industry.
At the end of 1987, SBB ordered a first series of twelve locomotives for passenger transport, and in mid-1989 a second series of a further twelve units. The first twelve pieces were as Re 4/4 VI ordered under the operating numbers from 10,701 to 10,712, which, however, at that time of the Ae 3/6 I were occupied.
In autumn 1989 the Federal Council commissioned SBB to provide capacities for piggyback traffic. The SLM / ABB consortium also took part in the tender , with their further performance-optimized concept, Lok 2000 and two variants of it. The consortium won the tender and in mid-1990 was awarded the contract for a further 75 machines, which also became known as ' Hupac ' locomotives. This was the first time that SBB had ordered 99 locomotives of one type that were only available on the drawing board.
Discussions between BLS and the SLM / ABB consortium also began in autumn 1989 , which ultimately led to the development of the Re 465 .
Originally two or four-stream versions of the Re 460 were to be ordered for freight transport. However, this project was abandoned in favor of the SBB Re 482 , which was specially designed for freight traffic , as even the price of a Re 460 at that time was significantly higher than that of a comparable freight locomotive available today.
For the time being, the Re 460 is the last full-line mainline locomotive that was almost entirely designed by Swiss companies. Locomotive construction in Switzerland had to be stopped for economic reasons. Only Stadler Rail still produces locomotives for shunting and cogwheel operation in Switzerland .
Development history of the Re 460
An important building block for the development of the Re 460 was the Re 456 developed by SLM and BBC , which was supplied to private railways from 1987 onwards. The locomotive, externally related to the Re 4/4 IV , was the first converter locomotive in Switzerland to work with GTO thyristors and three-phase asynchronous motors . From 1989 a further development of the Re 456 with a new design was also used by the SBB as the Re 450 . Parts of the electrical equipment of the Re 456/450 formed the technical basis of the locomotive 2000.
The first Re 4/4 460, as it was called at that time, was presented to the public in early 1991 in a non-roadworthy condition. In mid-1991 the 460,000 in Oerlikon covered its first meters on its own. The first Re 460 was officially delivered on January 28, 1992. By the beginning of 1996, 119 Re 460 units had been built, which were given the operating numbers 460 000 to 460 118 by the SBB.

With the commissioning of the Re 460 from the could 1920 originating Ae 3/6 I and Ae 4/7 and from the 1940s coming -Jahren Re 4/4 I be scrapped. The Re 460 were in regular traffic from 1994 after many teething problems had been eliminated. In passenger traffic they downgraded the Re 4/4 II to lower services.
Initially, the Re 460 were used in both passenger and freight traffic - sometimes with multiple controls . When SBB was divisionalized on September 1, 1999, Re 460 079–118 were part of freight transport. In order to be able to use all locomotives that are suitable for 200 km / h and remote control by the IC or IC-2000 control car for passenger transport, the Re 6/6 were reallocated and SBB Cargo also procured the international cargo locomotive as a replacement Bombardier Traxx , which has the same performance but only has a top speed of 140 km / h. On January 1, 2003, 079–095, 2004 096–102 and 2005 the remaining locomotives were taken over by the Passenger Transport division of Cargo. The Re 460 is now mainly used on IC2000 trains or shuttle trains consisting of EW IV and IC-Bt control cars.
modernization
The SBB announced that all of their 119 locomotives will be modernized by the end of 2022. Among other things that are GTO by - IGBT - inverter replaced, which feed the traction motors with power and recover braking energy. Thanks to the new converters, SBB saved 27 gigawatt hours of energy every year. After the conversion, the locomotives can be recognized from the outside by means of the logo and the number attached to the side on the front as well as a new, shiny red paint job. As of September 2017, eleven locomotives had been converted, with the new converter only being installed in one locomotive and subjected to extensive tests. The number on the front has been dispensed with since the seventh rebuilt locomotive.
Variations of the Re 460
From 2000 onwards, some Re 460s with radio remote control were used as Ref 460s in Gotthard freight traffic. The Re 460 was ordered in a slightly more powerful version than the BLS Re 465 for the BLS Lötschbergbahn . Other offshoots of the Lok 2000 family can also be found at foreign railway companies, for example for the wide-gauge VR-Yhtymä (Finnish State Railways) as Sr2 (46 pieces). 22 went to the Norwegian Norges Statsbaner as El 18 and two machines under the designation KCRC TLN / TLS to the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCR) (HongKong / China) for operation between Kowloon (Hong Kong) and Guangzhou .
Advertising locomotives
The film manufacturer Agfa has worked out a concept for full mobile advertising together with SBB. The general management of the Federal Railroad agreed and the first advertising locomotives, the Re 460 015 in the Agfa corporate colors and their company logo, hit the rails in 1994. At almost the same time, an inquiry was made by Ciba, now Novartis . Ciba also reached an agreement with SBB, the Re 460 016 followed its sister in May 1994. Today, however, all machines are approved for advertising. Nobody thought at the beginning that the advertising locomotives would be such a big success. Whether for advertising companies, railway photographers or model railway manufacturers, the Re 460 advertising locomotives are a welcome change. No other Swiss locomotive wore as many different colored clothes as the Re 460.
